The path of spiritual purification and the path of worldly pollution represent two entirely different ways of existence. In this world, which is built upon material foundations, people live their lives constantly buffeted by the waves of the and . As a result, their Body-Mind-Spirit remains in a state of perpetual fluctuation, never finding a moment of true stillness.
Most people exist in a state where the manifestation of is constant. They live their daily lives alongside their and attached spirits, yet they have become so accustomed to this state that they no longer perceive the underlying suffering. As time flows forward, they pass through the cycle of birth, aging, sickness, and death, day after day. Their physical bodies are trapped in a relentless cycle of chasing after desires and seeking temporary satisfaction, only to find that the hunger for more returns immediately. It is of the utmost importance that you learn to halt this cycle of worldly pollution.
True practice is the act of living a simple, purified life. It is a fundamental attitude of having few desires and knowing contentment, which must be expressed through your actual daily actions. Regardless of the time or the specific situation you find yourself in, the ability to keep your Body-Mind-Spirit in a state of purity—untainted by the world—is the true measure of your meditative concentration.
By diligently practising the purification of your heart and chanting Namo Amituofo, you will gradually attain this meditative concentration. When you first begin your practice, you may find that your mind is unsettled, easily swayed by the environment, and that your internal state is constantly dictated by external circumstances. However, through persistent effort, you will reach a state where the environment follows your mind. Your heart will remain unmoved, and you will no longer be a slave to the external world.
When your Six Roots interact with the external Six Dusts, how can you discern whether your pure practice is bearing fruit? You may look for these three signs of success:
