Samadhi: The Path to Awakening
Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju
Second Session of the 2019 Global Dharma Assembly for Disaster Mitigation and Blessing
The Nature of the Unborn
The true self is unborn and undying. It neither comes nor goes, for this has always been its original state. When one perceives the original realm of the Tathagata, having entered samadhi and attained stillness becomes a natural, everyday state of being. One no longer struggles against the world, but instead rests in the profound peace of one's own nature.
The Truth of Karmic Affinity
To appear in the world, one must be connected by karmic affinity. To follow the conditions of the environment with a clear heart is the Truth. Infinite light illuminates all darkness, dispelling the shadows of ignorance. When one reaches a state of no-mind, no-thought, and , one is truly free from the attachments that bind one to the cycle of rebirth.
The Stages of Realisation
At the first stage of practice, one remains unmoved and enters Meditation (Concentration). From within this deep meditative state, one manifests in the world to assist others. At the second stage, both movement and stillness are seen as unchanging, for the mind is no longer swayed by external circumstances. At the third stage, one clarifies the heart and fully realises the true self, seeing the original nature that has been present all along.
The Unity of Buddha and Self
Chanting Namo Amituofo is the most direct path to attaining samadhi, which is fundamentally a profound meditative concentration. The heart, the Buddha, and oneself are one entity. In the deep meditative state, they merge completely without any discriminations. Naturally, all things arise from the void, and the of Ultimate Bliss is exactly like this—a manifestation of the pure, original nature that resides within us all.
These teachings were recorded by the Buddha's disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
