The Essence of Single-Mindedness

What does it truly mean to have single-minded devotion to the Buddha? It is a state of being where the heart is free from duality, delusion, and impurity. To have a single mind is to possess no secondary thoughts, no scattered intentions, and no internal conflict. It is a heart that has returned to its original, pristine state, focused entirely on the path of .

When we ask what a Buddha is, we are looking at the highest embodiment of existence. A Buddha is one who perfectly follows the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way. A Buddha is selfless and devoid of the ego, existing in a state of absolute purity and goodness. Because a Buddha has no trace of worldly attachment, they have entered the state of Nirvana—the eternal, tranquil, and blissful state of true existence.

The Radiance of Awakened Being

A Buddha is defined by three profound qualities of awakening: Self-Awakening, where the Buddha has realised their true nature and attained Buddhahood through their own inner clarity; Awakening Others, where the Buddha possesses the infinite capacity and to guide all beings toward the same path of liberation; and Perfected Awakening and Practice, where the Buddha has achieved the ultimate perfection in both their own realisation and their compassionate actions to save others.

To have single-minded devotion to the Buddha means that your heart is in complete harmony with the Buddha-heart. When the Buddha looks upon the suffering of beings, the Buddha feels a profound desire to rescue them, to help them leave suffering behind, and to bring them true, lasting happiness. This is why the Buddha established the Forty-eight Great Vows and created the of Ultimate Bliss.

A Vow to Save All Beings

If you are a practitioner who is truly devoted to the Buddha, you will naturally follow the Buddha-actions. You become a living embodiment of the Buddha-heart and the Buddha-vow. If you wish to save countless suffering beings, you must first begin by saving yourself and the spirits residing within your own body. By following the Buddha-vow, you use the power of the Forty-eight Great Vows to rescue all beings from their endless cycles of suffering.

Single-minded devotion is not merely a temporary feeling; it is a lifelong commitment. Even when the external environment changes, even when you face interference, or when the tests of demons manifest, your heart remains unmoved. Even when this physical body suffers from the pains of aging, illness, or when the moment of death approaches, you will not be swayed. Your heart will not change, your faith in the Buddha will remain firm, and your vow to reach the Western Pure Land will never falter.

The Eternal Path of True Cultivation

Single-minded devotion is the practice of one who, from the very first moment of awakening until the final attainment of Buddhahood, continues to chant one Buddha's name to the end. It is the path for those who understand the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way, and who sincerely desire to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. Through this devotion, you can achieve a state where you do not grow old, do not get sick, and your spirit does not die.

To walk this path, you must understand the importance of True Cultivation: recognise the value of life, understanding that this human life is a precious opportunity to transcend the cycle of rebirth; practise with courage and determination, never allowing your efforts to wane; see through and let go, recognising that the world is an illusory, shifting landscape; and thoroughly change your personality traits, abandon the false, and return to your true nature. By doing so, you seek to realise your true nature and attain Buddhahood, fulfilling your ultimate purpose: to save countless suffering beings. Namo Amituofo.
