Teachings by Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju:
To "swiftly change" means to change your ways immediately.
Who is without fault? But when you know you have faults, you must change them; when you know you can change, you must do so swiftly.
The so-called "faults" refer to creating negative causes, which will lead to evil consequences in the future, or even immediate evil consequences.
The laws of and cause and effect are subtle; the karma created does not perish.
As long as a cause is created, whether it is a good cause or a negative cause, there will inevitably be a time to receive the retribution.
The karma created does not perish, meaning the matter of receiving retribution will not vanish into thin air. Regardless of how many hundreds of thousands of millions of eons pass, when the Causal Conditions meet, one will surely receive the retribution.
Namo Amituofo often teaches the fourfold assembly: if you have faults, you must swiftly change your ways.
He also teaches the demon crowds, requesting them to immediately stop using "magic" against Practitioner Su.
This is to remind and appeal to the public and the demon crowds to swiftly change their ways and stop continuing to create negative causes and suffering evil consequences.
Within the true self / self-nature, there is no the "self," personal ego, and selfishness, nor will one create negative causes or receive evil consequences.
Therefore, when there are any faults or areas that need to be changed during your practice, it is appropriate to change your ways swiftly.
Do not commit a negative act because it seems small, and do not fail to perform a good deed because it seems small.
The distinction between the size of negative and good deeds lies in the heart. According to the principles:
A good deed done with a negative heart is considered negative;
An evil deed done with a good heart is considered good.
If, according to both matter and principle, both heart and action can be good, that is the best and most appropriate. If it is difficult to be so perfect, then do the next best thing: value the heart and swiftly change your ways.
This applies to everyone, whether child, adult, or elder, regardless of status, position, role, or duty.
