The Aftertaste of Life: A Message from Zhao Puchu
The Seventeenth Letter of Zhao Puchu, Former President of the Buddhist Association of China
Recorded on August 3, 2017
The Bitter Truth of Existence
Do you agree with the statement that life is full of suffering? If you nod in agreement, then I must congratulate you, for there is hope for your salvation. Life is fleeting, lasting only a few decades. I, Zhao Puchu, have lived for ninety years in the blink of an eye. Everything I accomplished during those years has ultimately led me to this state of existence within the space. If it were not for the immense of Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre, I would still be trapped in this dimension, unable to find a way out.
During my time in the human world, I dedicated my life to the integration of Buddhism. I faced countless challenges, navigating through both adversity and prosperity. There were moments of and moments of exhaustion; there were times of smooth progress and times of great hardship. I have experienced everything that life has to offer. Now, I tell you with a loud, earnest, and certain voice: it was not worth it. All the effort and struggle I poured into my work, if it does not lead to rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, is truly not worth it.
The Illusion of Worldly Achievement
In this life, you are constantly being manipulated by external forces. You are trapped in a cycle where you are influenced by many things:
- Emotional fluctuations: Your moods rise and fall, dictating your state of mind.
- The emptiness of unfulfilled desires: You are constantly chasing satisfaction that never truly arrives.
- The joys and sorrows of human relationships: You are bound by the complex web of human connections.
- Physical limitations: Your body’s needs and frailties constantly demand your attention.
- Family burdens: The responsibilities and attachments to family members pull you in every direction.
All of these factors keep you suffering in a state of turmoil. You must awaken, everyone! If you are suffering and yet do not realise that you are suffering, then you have truly been reincarnated for far too long. Are you truly so numb to the exhaustion of life and death? Listen to the dialogue of your own spirit and stop being deceived by the illusions of your physical body. You must seize this opportunity well and allow your life to finally find its true sweetness. Do not continue to suffer.
