Where does thought power originate? It comes from the heart. The nature of the thought power you emit depends entirely on whether your heart is pure or polluted. When a heart filled with pure recognises the suffering of beings yet feels powerless to alleviate it, that compassion naturally manifests. This is the moment one becomes willing to purify their own intentions, to save oneself before saving others, and to attain liberation before helping others find their own path to freedom.
Consider the example of , who chose to leave his home and abandon all desires to become a monk. Under the guidance of his teacher, Lokesvararaja Buddha, he established the Forty-eight Great Vows. Upon the fulfilment of every single vow, he established the of Ultimate Bliss. This realm serves as a sanctuary where the spirits of all beings can find a true home, no longer forced to wander the six realms of rebirth in suffering and helplessness. Within the radiance of Infinite Life and Infinite Light, beings can practise, attain liberation, leave suffering behind and find happiness, rediscover their true self, and eventually attain Buddhahood.
The application of thought power is essential in the practice of . It is rooted in compassion, with the vow to save beings and help them leave suffering behind. Within the practice of meditative visualisation, you will find that no matter where you look, there are beings present; every place is a site for both the observer and the observed.
As you chant the six-syllable holy name, the Holy Name "", beings enter the light and follow the Buddha-light to depart. Through this process, they receive Chao Du, attain liberation, and leave suffering behind. They may enter the heavenly realms, the human world, or the Western Land of Nature, or, through the power of chanting, receive the guidance of Namo Amituofo to enter the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
Thought power is also a vital tool for communication with other beings. It is utilised in several ways:
In the process of your daily practice, you must use your thought power to hold tightly onto the Holy Name "Namo Amituofo". There is no past, and there is no future; there is only the present moment. You must chant one Buddha's name to the end. By also contemplating the thought, "I am a Buddha", and chanting the Buddha-name with unwavering focus, you will assist yourself in reaching sooner. This practice will help you achieve success in your spiritual cultivation, allow you to distance yourself from the six realms of rebirth, and fulfil your deepest wish for rebirth in the Western Pure Land.
Ultimately, the application of thought power—whether it is used for Goodness or for evil—rests entirely upon the state of your heart. You must always hold compassion and Wisdom in your heart, with the salvation of all beings as your primary objective. As you engage in the purification of your body, mind, and spirit, as you work to save yourself and others, and as you cultivate future practitioners to spread the Pure Land teachings, you must combine your thought power with your vow power. This union will ensure that your spiritual achievements are realised without delay.
