The Weight of Suffering

Teachings from Namo Amituofo, recorded by the Buddha's disciple, Venerable HaiZe.

When we speak of the suffering of all beings, we are referring to the vast, encompassing reality of existence. The term all beings refers to every living creature, while suffering denotes the myriad forms of pain, hardship, illness, and the various plagues that afflict the world. Though we are all living spirits endowed with the same inherent Buddha-nature, our circumstances differ greatly due to the paths we have chosen and the we have accumulated.

Some beings are currently enduring the intense heat and cold of the evil realms, suffering through endless cycles of pain. Others reside in the realms of goodness, enjoying temporary . Some have attained liberation from the cycle of birth and death, while others dwell in the of Ultimate Bliss, bathed in Infinite Life and Infinite Light, steadily progressing toward the attainment of Buddhahood. Still others exist as energy forms within the vastness of the galaxy. Why is there such a profound disparity in our destinations?

The Heart as the Architect of Destiny

It is all because of the heart. The state of your heart determines where your spirit will be reborn and where it will eventually go. This is why the heart is of such paramount importance. The Buddha’s teachings are essentially heart-teachings; they are the methods and the path to becoming a Buddha. To study the Buddha’s teachings is to learn how to become a Buddha, to become a Great Awakened Being.

If a Buddha were to manifest in this world, all beings could be spared from the depths of suffering and the agony of illness. Yet, the suffering of beings is complex and often hidden from their own awareness.

The Threefold Nature of Suffering

There are three distinct levels of suffering that trap beings in the cycle of rebirth:

  • The Unconscious Suffering:
  • Many beings are trapped in a state of misery but are entirely unaware that they are suffering. They mistake their pain for normalcy. The Conscious but Trapped Suffering:
  • Some beings know they are suffering, yet they find themselves unable to leave that state. They are bound by their habits and .The Desperate Suffering: Others know they are suffering and desperately wish to leave it behind, but they have no one to guide them or save them from their plight.

Learning the Buddha’s teachings and chanting the name of Namo Amituofo are the keys to attaining Buddhahood. However, one must observe how each practitioner approaches their study and their chanting. Success depends entirely on the work you put into your own heart.

A Sanctuary in the Turbid World

The , , and Selfless Giving—are the essential conditions that every practitioner must possess if they wish to save beings from suffering and attain Buddhahood. My children, you must understand the significance of your environment.

The Vow of the Fourfold Assembly

If you wish to resolve the suffering of all beings, you must first recognise that suffering exists and then seek the path of liberation. By practising diligently at this Buddha-land, you can realise your true nature and attain . Only after you have realised your true nature and attained Buddhahood can you truly save all beings from their suffering.

This is the path of self-salvation and saving others; it is the method of self-liberation and liberating others. This is the sacred responsibility of every member of the fourfold assembly and every child of the Buddha. May you all take this responsibility to heart and walk the path of the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way.
