Words of Namo Amituofo

The Foundation of Spiritual Practice
is the vital condition for any practitioner who wishes to learn the Buddha’s path and attain Buddhahood through Buddha recitation. Without a heart of true compassion, one cannot progress on the journey toward . We must understand the two distinct aspects of this heart:
- : This is the heart that wishes to bring true and happiness to all sentient beings.
- Compassion: This is the heart that seeks to rescue all beings, helping them leave suffering behind and find lasting peace.
Every sentient being possesses a , a sensitive awareness, and an original, true self. However, for most, this true self is obscured by the veils of our own thoughts and . We allow our consciousness to take charge of our lives, leading us through the cycle of rebirth for accumulated lifetimes. Despite this, the original, pure nature of our true self remains untouched and perfect, waiting to be rediscovered.
The Journey of Returning Home
The entire process of learning the Buddha’s teachings and chanting Namo Amituofo is, in essence, the journey of returning to your true self. When sentient beings, who are currently trapped in the suffering of the cycle of rebirth, are finally rescued, they are able to leave suffering and gain happiness. They no longer endure the various hardships of the worldly realm, but instead receive all happiness. This transformation occurs when beings remove their impurities, undergo purification, and gradually eliminate the dominance of their deluded consciousness. As this happens, the sensitive awareness of their true self begins to manifest.
The Vow of Namo Amituofo
The reason Namo Amituofo made the vow to constantly exercise a compassionate heart to rescue sentient beings is rooted in the vision of the . Namo Amituofo observed that all beings in the Ten Directions of the Dharma Realm are entangled in the suffering of the cycle of rebirth. They are powerless to resolve their own suffering, and they are dominated by their own . They suffer without true joy. Even when they seem to experience temporary happiness, they often create more negative karma within that very joy. Once that fleeting pleasure is exhausted, suffering manifests once again. Therefore, the vow to rescue all beings was born from this profound understanding.
The Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way
This vow is not merely a choice; it is the manifestation of the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way. It is the natural operation of the laws of the universe, which resonate with the hearts of all beings, whether they are inclined toward goodness or trapped in evil thoughts. This is the reality of the worldly realm. In contrast, the of Ultimate Bliss is a world of pure goodness, where there is not even a fraction of evil. In that realm, beings do not need to think or plan; they simply follow their hearts, and all their needs are met naturally. In the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, beings do not need to stir their consciousness. Even if a thought arises, it is always aligned with goodness, and no evil thoughts can ever take root. In this environment, the spirit undergoes purification, and then more purification, until one becomes a spirit of pure goodness and finally sees their true nature. Namo Amituofo.
