The Noble Essence of an Elder

The term Elder is a title of deep respect. It is not merely a designation for those who are senior in age or status. Rather, it is a title reserved for those who possess true virtue and have made significant contributions to the welfare of others. An Elder is someone who commands the genuine respect of juniors and all beings through their character and their dedication to the Truth.

The Radiant Conduct of a Virtuous Guide

What, then, are the qualities that define the conduct of such an Elder? Their actions are a beacon for all who seek to walk the path of . An Elder embodies the following traits:

  • Nurturing and Teaching: They care for and guide the younger generation with patience and wisdom.
  • Leading by Example: Through their own conduct and speech, they help juniors grow, allowing them to absorb the through daily observation and interaction.
  • Transforming : They assist others in refining their Body, Speech, and Mind, helping them to correct improper actions, words, and thoughts.
  • Humility and Modesty: In all their actions, they remain humble and modest, never displaying arrogance. This natural grace is the wind of virtue that flows from their presence.
  • Selfless Dedication: They give their heart and soul to their work without seeking credit, viewing their service as their natural duty.
  • Unwavering Perseverance: When working for the benefit of all beings, they do not retreat when faced with interference or obstacles. They possess the resolve and determination to maintain their vow forever.

The Unwavering Path of Diligent Practice

An Elder possesses the clarity of heart and to handle human affairs with wisdom, rather than acting on impulse or personal temperament. They listen deeply to the teachings of Namo Amituofo, Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju, and Practitioner Su, and they put these teachings into practice with the utmost reverence.

Their diligent practice of chanting Namo Amituofo is so successful that they become a living model for all beings to emulate. Their practice is constant, maintained throughout the 24/7, in every movement—whether walking, standing, sitting, or lying down. Through this continuous effort, they attain the and the wisdom of the Dharani.

Furthermore, they diligently practise the (Discipline), Concentration and Wisdom, effectively extinguishing greed, anger, and delusion. By holding the Precepts (Discipline) and cultivating deep concentration, their wisdom is fully awakened. This is what it means to be a practitioner who has truly achieved success.

The Sacred Vow to Save All Beings

Most importantly, an Elder is one who takes full responsibility for the mission. They shoulder the burden of passing on the teachings and save beings, ensuring their rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. They operate with the mindset that they will save as many beings as possible, one by one. When they encounter difficulties or tests, they face them directly and never seek to escape.

The conduct of an Elder is marked by a Body-Mind-Spirit that is harmonious and unified. Practitioner Su is a perfect example of this. As they walk in this world with a human body, they follow the Buddha to save beings. All of you should recognise this, respect it, and learn from it. Doing so will be of immense benefit to your own practice.
