The Karmic Roots of Personality
Generally speaking, one's personality is closely related to one's . In our daily lives, we often believe that our temperament is simply 'who we are,' but in truth, it is karma that acts as the master, and it is cultivated through our daily lives. Every move of the human body, every expression of , anger, sorrow, or happiness, and the inevitable cycle of birth, aging, sickness, and death are all closely related to the karma we have accumulated.
For those who have not yet learned to transform karma, every reaction to the people, events, and environments we encounter is governed by our personality. These reactions are not random; they are unfolding within the framework of and the causes and effects. We are often trapped in a cycle of habitual responses, unaware that these patterns are merely the echoes of our past actions manifesting in the present.
The Freedom of the Awakened
In contrast, those who have successfully transformed their karma—such as the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, patriarchs, and venerable masters, and those who have realised their true nature—have transcended the limitations of a fixed personality. Because they are no longer bound by these habitual patterns, they are not subject to the interference of personality or the control of karma.
When they speak or act, they do so with . Their actions are guided by their vow to save beings, and they observe the specific conditions of each individual to provide the most appropriate guidance. They are no longer reacting; they are responding with the clarity of the true self.
The Influence of Environment and Technology
The cultivation of personality is also closely linked to the environment in which one grows. It is shaped by the methods of those who raise us and the philosophies of those who educate us. In modern society, we must ask ourselves: are we becoming overly reliant on technology? When children are constantly exposed to computers, mobile phones, and various media, they learn to imitate what they see. This often leads to the excessive use of these tools and the development of improper hearts and actions.
The formation of character depends on several key factors: the environment in which one resides, the quality of one's innate potential, and the education one receives. The earlier we begin to guide a child, the more effectively we can lead them toward positive development. Early intervention is the key to planting seeds of wisdom.
The Path of Righteous Education
When a child or a practitioner displays positive mental notes, thoughts, or actions, we should encourage them. We can offer praise or recognition to reinforce these virtuous habits. Conversely, when negative or harmful character traits appear, we must be able to point them out, correct them, or stop them entirely, while teaching the individual how to respond with the right attitude.
Whether we are dealing with positive or negative traits, the goal is always the same: to transform the negative into the positive and the evil into Goodness. We must guide them toward a heart of kindness and virtuous behaviour. If we can raise children in an environment that emphasises the practice of , the cultivation of selflessness, the development of , and the spirit of service, we can effectively avoid the problems caused by karma and the interference of .
By growing in such an environment, one can develop a pure and good character that is in sync with the true self. This is the true purpose of Buddhist education—to help us rediscover our original nature and live a life of genuine freedom and peace. Namo Amituofo.
