The Rhythms of Growth and Decay

Namo Amituofo’s discourse. Recorded and transcribed by Namo Amituofo’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe.

When we speak of flourishing and decline, we are describing the natural cycles of growth and decay that permeate all existence. The rise and fall of a nation is deeply connected to the and misfortunes of those who hold power and govern its people. Similarly, the flourishing and decline of our own lives are manifested through the appearance of our past , playing out within the inevitable cycle of birth, aging, sickness, and death.

However, the flourishing and decline of the Buddha’s teachings are determined by something far more intimate: the human heart. When the human heart is consumed by selfishness, placing one's own interests above all else, the Buddha’s teachings begin to fade and decline.

The Shadow of the Selfish Heart

As the enters a period of decline, the influence of demon crowds begins to manifest and even rise. These forces create interference, obstructing our practice and making it difficult for us to see our true nature. When our hearts are clouded by ego, the path to Buddhahood becomes arduous and nearly impossible to traverse.

Conversely, when the human heart is dedicated to the benefit of all beings—when it is entirely selfless—the Buddha’s teachings can flourish once more. This flourishing brings immense benefit to the masses, helping them to find liberation from the cycle of birth and death. When the Buddha’s teachings are vibrant and strong, they possess the power to transform and subdue the demon crowds, leading them to accept the teachings and finally find peace. In this state, the influence of magic and negative forces wanes, the obstacles are broken, and the light of our true self-nature is revealed.

The Eternal Radiance of the

For ten kalpas, the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss has been leading countless sentient beings in the Dharma realm back to the Western Pure Land. It is a world of perfect equality. Within that realm, there is no distinction between good and bad, superior or inferior. It is the constant, true Dharma-Nature Land, where there is no concept of flourishing or decay, no division between you and me, no high or low, no right or wrong, and no light or darkness.

The Path of the Faithful Practitioner

For those who believe in the Buddha, the path is clear:

  • Maintain a heart of absolute sincerity, free from doubt.
  • Accept the teachings and put them into practice to awaken your inherent Wisdom.
  • Know how to repent for your negative karma and resolve not to repeat past mistakes.
  • Continuously refine your character until all flaws are eradicated.

Those who truly believe in the Buddha keep the name of Namo Amituofo in their minds at every moment, never letting it slip away. They focus their entire being on chanting the Buddha’s name, seeking rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. When your heart contains the Buddha and your vows are aligned with the Buddha, the light of the Buddha will naturally manifest in your every action. Through diligent practice, you will see your true nature and move freely back to the Western Pure Land.

Our Collective Responsibility

The flourishing of the Pure Land depends entirely on whether we truly believe in the Buddha and whether we truly believe in Namo Amituofo. Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre is the place where Namo Amituofo truly dwells. We must ask ourselves: do the fourfold assembly of disciples truly believe in the Buddha? Is the Buddha truly present within our hearts?

The flourishing or decline of the Pure Land is a responsibility shared by every member of the fourfold assembly. By engaging in diligent practice and successfully seeing our true nature, we can follow the Buddha in the work of saving the world and rescuing all beings.
