The Hidden Barrier of Arrogance

Arrogance is a state of mind that fluctuates in its intensity, yet it consistently manifests as discriminations when we interact with others. When we are clouded by this pride, we fail to recognise that every being we encounter possesses the same inherent Buddha-nature as we do. We see only differences, rather than the shared potential for .

The Gap Between Knowledge and Practice

It is one thing to understand the terminology of the , but it is quite another to truly put these teachings into practice. Many of us can speak eloquently about the path, yet we find it incredibly difficult to walk it. If we do not cultivate genuine respect within our hearts, we will find that our progress is hindered at every step. Even if we recite the sutras or speak of the truth, if our hearts remain closed to humility, we will struggle to receive the true benefits of the Dharma.

The Isolation of the Proud Mind

When arrogance manifests in our eyes, it is often a sign that our hearts are deeply unsettled. We become defensive, constantly guarding ourselves against the perceived intrusion of others. Over time, this arrogance hardens into deep-seated habits. We stop trusting those around us, and as a result, they naturally begin to distance themselves from us. We become isolated, trapped within the walls of our own ego.

The Cycle of Negativity

When we are consumed by pride, we find it difficult to listen to words of Goodness. Even when others offer sincere counseling, their words merely pass by our ears without taking root. We begin to view the world through a distorted lens, seeing only the faults in others while remaining blind to our own shortcomings. We focus on the bad rather than the good, constantly judging others while refusing to acknowledge our own errors.

Returning to the Right Path

Sometimes, it is only through the pain of failure that our pride is finally broken. We must realise that dwelling on the faults of others only serves to diminish our own . When we see our own arrogance reflected in our faces and our lives, we must take a moment to reflect. We should feel a sense of shame for our past actions and resolve to let arise within us once more. By doing so, we can purify our hearts and return to our true, original nature.
