The Foundation of All Existence

In the teachings of Buddhism, we are reminded that all dharmas are mind-only. Everything that manifests in our lives, from the smallest flicker of thought to the grandest events, originates from the movements of our own hearts. Because our intentions and mental notes are the architects of our reality, we must realise that we are the sole creators of our own experiences. When different individuals encounter the exact same situation, their internal states differ. Consequently, because their mental intentions are unique, they sow different seeds, which inevitably lead to different fruits. This is the essential wisdom of the Buddha’s teachings.

Every time a thought arises in your heart, you have already set the laws of and cause and effect into motion. Every single detail of your life—every action, every word, and every intention—is something you have created yourself, and therefore, it is something you must experience for yourself. This is the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way that governs all existence.

The Inescapable Web of Cause and Effect

Consider the vastness of this truth: the formation of the entire universe and the vastness of space are governed by these laws. The personal journey of a practitioner, including their struggles, their efforts, and their eventual spiritual success, is entirely subject to these laws. Every move you make, every word you speak, and every thought you harbour is a seed that will eventually ripen.

Because you exist within this Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way, you can never escape the consequences of your own actions. Once you truly understand this, you will realise that no matter where you go, or whom you meet, you are always interacting with the laws of karma and cause and effect.

Do not harbour any hope of escaping these laws through luck or chance. Instead, when you realise you have made a mistake, you must correct it immediately. When you are on the right path, you must continue to move forward with diligence. This applies to your personal mental state, your daily behaviour, and even the way a community operates.

Transforming Karma Through the Power of Vows

The Buddha’s teachings encourage us to follow conditions as they arise, rather than forcing them. This is because everything is already unfolding within the framework of karma. Conditions are simply the manifestation of our past karma. However, there is one exception: if your vow is powerful enough, you can transform your karma. To transform karma, your vow must be a Great Vow, possessing a strength that surpasses the weight of your past actions. Only when you can transform your karma is it possible to transform the conditions you face. This is the immense value of a sincere vow.

The most important aspect of a vow is that it must be put into actual practice. It is not enough to merely speak of it with your lips. If you only talk about your intentions without acting upon them, your vow will be as fragile as a thin mist that scatters in the wind, or as weak as a piece of paper that tears at the slightest touch. How could such a weak resolve possibly withstand the force of stubborn, deep-seated karma?

The Vital Importance of Genuine Action

When the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas were in the stages of their own practice, they all made great vows. These vows were selfless, focused entirely on the benefit of all beings, and were supported by genuine, consistent action. Only those who truly act upon their vows have the possibility of attaining Buddhahood.

Consider the example of Namo Amituofo. Over the course of five kalpas of dedicated practice, Namo Amituofo established the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss. Through the Forty-eight Great Vows, every single promise was fulfilled, and every aspiration was realised. It was only through this unwavering commitment to the path that Namo Amituofo could attain Buddhahood and be known by the name Namo Amituofo.

Following the Path of Namo Amituofo

We must follow this example, ensuring that our practice is not just a collection of words, but a living, breathing commitment to the Truth. By aligning our hearts with the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way, we too can find our way home to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss.
