The Path of Service and Cultivation
Practice is not confined to the bodhimanda. Whether you are participating in group cultivation or serving within the temple, every member of the fourfold assembly (monks, nuns, laymen, laywomen) is engaged in practice through cooperation and service to others. When you work together, you are not merely completing tasks; you are refining your hearts and actions.
Consider those who take responsibility for preparing meals and medicine. The kitchen becomes their primary place of practice. Within the shared labour and the daily interactions of the kitchen, you have the opportunity to cultivate essential qualities:
- Tolerance: Learning to accept the perspectives and habits of others with patience.
- Mutual Support: Offering help without hesitation, fostering a spirit of harmony.
- Expansion of Mind-Capacity: Opening your heart to embrace others, letting go of narrow self-interest.
Mindful Engagement with the
You must learn to make good use of the functions of your six sense organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, mind). As you engage with the world of sights, sounds, smells, tastes, touch, and thoughts, you are constantly interacting with the environment. This is especially true when you are working with food, vegetables, fruits, and various cooking methods.
Beyond your personal culinary experience, if your mind is open and clear, you can truly connect with the essence of the food. You will come to understand its unique characteristics and the situations for its preparation. This awareness allows you to preserve the nutritional value of the ingredients and recognise the perfect moment for serving.
If you can spend your time in the kitchen while chanting the Buddha-name, you transform your work into a profound spiritual act. By using the Buddha-name, you establish a deep affinity with all the beings present in the kitchen—the food, the vegetables, the ingredients, and even the utensils. You are helping them to chant and to be liberated from the limitations of space. This is the mark of one who possesses and Wisdom, and who is making steady progress in their practice.
The Heart of the Practitioner
In your practice, you must be vigilant in guarding your heart. Do not allow your mind to fall into the traps of greed, anger, ignorance, arrogance, and doubt. Instead, you should strive to enter into the state of , meditative concentration, and Wisdom. Remain humble and modest at all times. Cultivate a firm faith—faith in the Buddha, faith in your own true self, and faith in others. If you can nurture and maintain a heart of compassion, , , and the ability to let go, you are acting in accordance with your true self and are drawing closer to the state of those who have realised their true nature.
The Ultimate Goal of
In your practice, you must learn to emulate the Buddha by practising and no-mind. When you realise that all beings are one, the distinctions of time and space dissolve. You will then be able to respond to the needs of all beings according to their capacity to understand, just as the Buddha does.
The Dharma Gate relies on the dual support of arises and the Buddha's . Through this diligent practice, you will overcome the obstacles of and the interference of demons, moving straight ahead until you see your true nature. This is the very essence of practice at the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Goombungee, Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia—the place where Namo Amituofo truly abides.
