Words of Namo Amituofo:

Self-restraint is the manifestation of our capacity for self-management and the practical application of our commitment to the path. For the practitioner, it is the essential foundation for maintaining the . When we look at our past actions, our personality, and our ingrained habits, we must recognise that many of these are not conducive to our spiritual practice. Therefore, we must use the precepts as a tool for self-restraint to prevent ourselves from committing further transgressions. Once an old, unwholesome habit begins to surface, you must stop it immediately.

The Weight of Past

You should understand that improper habits or negative tendencies are the very seeds that have created sins over countless lifetimes. In the past, we have endured immeasurable suffering because of these very patterns. In this life, as we engage in practice, our only hope is to cleanse the karma of our past. Everything we encounter and every action we take is governed by the laws of karma and cause and effect. Beings are trapped in the cycle of rebirth precisely because they are caught within these laws.

  • Some lack sufficient awareness
  • .Some refuse to listen to counseling
  • or guidance. Some cling tightly to their own views and ego-attachment
  • .Some are simply unable to exercise self-control.

Regardless of the reason, once a cause is planted, the corresponding result will inevitably manifest. If you violate the precepts, the resulting suffering will be profound, and such a bitter harvest is truly difficult to endure.

The Responsibility of the Practitioner

Those who have entered the Buddha’s gate must be especially cautious. To know the precepts and yet choose to violate them is a transgression that carries even greater weight. You must be vigilant! In Buddhism, the precepts are evaluated by the state of one's heart. As soon as an unwholesome every thought and intention arises, the violation is already established. We do not wait for the physical action to occur before we judge the transgression. If the action is carried out, compounded by the initial negative mental note, how can one possibly avoid the bitter consequences?

The Foundation of Spiritual Success

Within the Sutra, Vinaya, and Abhidharma, the Vinaya (the collection of precepts) plays a vital role, which highlights the supreme importance of maintaining Discipline. Upholding the precepts is a fundamental requirement for all who seek the truth. Self-restraint is the necessary condition for this Discipline. Ultimately, the successful cultivation of the precepts serves as a clear indicator of one's progress and success in practice. May you always remain mindful, keeping your heart pure and your conduct aligned with the Buddha’s teachings.
