The Five Pillars of Spiritual Growth

What does it truly mean to engage in practice? It is a comprehensive journey that encompasses every facet of our existence. To practise is to commit oneself to a path of transformation that involves five essential pillars:

  • Cultivating the mind: Purifying the heart from all defilements.
  • Cultivating faith: Developing an unshakable belief in the teachings of Namo Amituofo.
  • Cultivating understanding: Gaining deep insight into the nature of reality.
  • Cultivating practice: Applying these teachings in every moment of our lives.
  • Cultivating verification: Personally experiencing the truth of the through our own progress.

The Purification of Body, Speech, and Mind

Beyond these pillars, we must also refine our daily conduct. This requires a diligent effort to correct our path and clarify our vision. We must focus on the following:

  • : Maintaining moral discipline to protect our practice.
  • Meditative concentration: Keeping the mind steady and focused.
  • Wisdom: Developing the clarity to see through the illusions of the world.
  • Body, Speech, and Mind: Ensuring that our physical actions, our words, and our thoughts are all aligned with the Right Way.

Living the Practice 24/7

True practice is not something we do only when we are in the temple or sitting in meditation. It must be integrated into our lives 24/7. We must never depart from this practical application. Whether we are walking, standing, sitting, or lying down, our focus remains on the Buddha-name. This constant is the heartbeat of our spiritual life.

The Fruit of

What is the ultimate goal of this journey? It is to reach a state where the ego no longer dictates our actions. The fruits of our practice are defined by:

  • No-mind: A state of pure, unconditioned awareness.
  • No-thought: Freedom from the constant chatter of the wandering mind.
  • No-selfishness: Letting go of personal agendas to serve the greater good.
  • No-self: Realising that the separate, grasping ego is merely an illusion.

When you are able to maintain this state of no-mind in every moment, and when every thought is free from the illusion of self, your heart will naturally open to all beings. You will treat others without a trace of selfishness, and the hearts of all beings will become clear and bright to you.

The Paradox of True Action

There is a profound mystery in the way of the enlightened: to act while not acting, and to not act while acting. When your heart is empty of attachments and desires, you are truly practising. This is the highest form of action. By returning to your natural state and seeking out your original, true nature, you will eventually see the truth for yourself. To truly attain this level of realisation is the greatest of all paths.
