Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju, recorded by the Buddha's disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
On the nineteenth of March, 2023, during the , Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju provided these essential teachings on the path of self-rescue.
Those who offer salvation can assist individuals trapped in dire straits to break through their perilous situations and enter a new path of life. However, along this journey, -rescue of the one in distress is absolutely essential. Without the internal resolve to change, external help can only go so far. You must be the one to take the first step toward your own liberation.
If a person who has been guided to a new path of life refuses to move forward, they fail to rescue themselves. They become trapped in their original position once more, falling back into danger. If they are unwilling to accept the salvation offered, allowing the dangers to continue harming their body, mind, and spirit, they lose the ability to govern themselves. To give up on oneself in this way is truly a great tragedy, for the potential for remains dormant within.
For those who truly wish to escape suffering and find liberation, you must first initiate your own rescue. Only then can the power of the Buddha provide the necessary support and to carry you forward. Self-rescue is the most fundamental understanding in your practice. To understand how to rescue yourself is an act of profound toward both yourself and all other beings who are still lost in the cycle of rebirth.
As a practitioner, you must recognise the nature of suffering and the difficulty of life. You must realise how rare and precious it is to have the opportunity to practise the . Only with this awareness can you truly begin to rescue yourself and make the vow to save all beings. Only then will you learn to cherish your blessings, treasure every second, and value the difficulty of your practice. This is how you can delve deeply and diligently into the Dharma gate you have chosen.
Once you have gained insight through deep practice, you must continue to advance with diligence. Do not merely skim the surface like a dragonfly touching the water, for that will leave you with nothing to show for your efforts. Instead, commit yourself fully to the path. Every single moment of realisation is a precious opportunity for progress, and every step you take toward your own awakening brings you closer to the of Ultimate Bliss.
