The world we inhabit is often described as a flowery world, a place filled with a kaleidoscope of colours and endless sensory distractions. In this environment, the heart is easily swayed by external conditions, becoming as fickle and changeable as the shifting winds. This state of constant flux is the very nature of the six realms of existence, where the hearts of beings are diverse, restless, and never truly settled.
The Illusion of the Flowery World
Many people believe that the human body is simply meant to exist in this state of perpetual change. They remain unaware that their true self is always present, waiting to be rediscovered. When you finally seek and find this true self, you will attain a state of meditative concentration and inner freedom that is no longer dictated by the external world. Throughout the universe, there are countless spaces and infinite beings. Every being you encounter has, at some point in the beginningless past, been a part of your own journey.
The Endless Cycle of Rebirth
The cycle of rebirth is relentless, and it is difficult to find a way out. Even if one were to be reborn into the heavenly realms, the three realms of existence remain like a burning house—there is no true peace to be found there. Reincarnation is not the ultimate destination. The life of the spirit has no beginning and no end; it is eternal. While the physical body may change its appearance, face, and form across countless lifetimes, the spirit itself remains the only constant.
Cultivating Stillness in a Turbulent World
In the midst of the chaos of this flowery world, how can you find true peace of heart? The answer lies in keeping the Buddha-name close to your heart at all times. By engaging in diligent practice, you can purify your body, mind, and spirit:
- Chanting the name of Namo Amituofo
- Performing prostrations to the Buddha
- Reciting the Sutras
These practices are the essential methods for your diligent practice. You must learn to draw your heart inward, away from the external distractions that have pulled it outward for so long. We live in a world defined by the five turbidities: the turbidity of the kalpa, the turbidity of views, the turbidity of afflictions, the turbidity of beings, and the turbidity of life. However, even while your body resides in this defiled world, your heart need not be defiled. Be grateful and joyful for the opportunity to possess this human body, for it is the vessel through which you can engage in True Cultivation to see your true nature.
