The Essence of a Calm Heart

True practice is the profound ability to maintain a calm and quiet heart, regardless of the situations you face. It is the art of meeting challenges with , acknowledging your mistakes, and resolving never to repeat them. If you repeat your mistakes, you are causing great harm to your own spiritual progress. A calm heart is not merely a suggestion; it is the essential cultivation that every practitioner must possess.

The Three Learnings of , Concentration, and Wisdom are the vital path that every student of the Buddha must traverse. Whether it is the discipline of the Precepts, the stability of meditative concentration, or the clarity of Wisdom, each is indispensable. Yet, you must understand that all of these are cultivated within the state of a calm heart.

The Danger of Mental Fluctuations

If your heart is filled with ripples and fluctuations, you will find it impossible to achieve success in any of the Three Learnings. Therefore, my dear children, you must reflect upon the state of your own mind. Ask yourself:

  • Is my heart frequently agitated by external situations?
  • Do I often find myself caught in a cycle of emotional turbulence?
  • Is my foundation in the Three Learnings shaky and unstable?

If you remain in a state of constant fluctuation, your adherence to the Precepts will be difficult to maintain. When your mind is in a state of agitation, it is easily turned by the environment around you. Even if your physical actions have not yet broken the Precepts, the ripples in your mind—if they contain evil thoughts—already generate negative . How can one hope to avoid the bitter consequences of such negative karma?

The Path to True Concentration

Unless you can reach a level of practice where you are no longer turned by external situations, your mind will remain unsettled. When your mind is constantly in a deep meditative state, the conditions that allow negative karma to manifest will not mature. Remember, while the cause may exist, if the conditions do not ripen, the negative consequences cannot manifest.

By observing the Precepts, your heart becomes peaceful and calm, free from ripples. This is how meditative concentration is easily achieved. Conversely, if you do not observe the Precepts, your heart will remain uneasy and agitated. Without this peace, there is no meditative concentration to speak of, and certainly no hope of achieving success in your practice. Without the foundation of meditative concentration, Wisdom cannot be opened.

The Manifestation of Wisdom

Is a calm heart truly that important? Yes, it is of the utmost importance. Therefore, my dear children, you must look inward and observe whether you are often in a state of calm, free from mental fluctuations. If you find that you are frequently in this state, you may then proceed to examine your meditative concentration:

  • Do you possess true meditative concentration?
  • Has your meditative concentration reached a level of maturity?
  • Are you able to enter the realm of Wisdom?

Only when the mind is settled and unmoving can you see the true reality of all things, and thus, Wisdom is opened. When Wisdom is opened, it manifests in your hearts and actions. You will naturally be able to discern whether the thoughts and actions of a practitioner are in accordance with the Precepts. You will understand the difference between a heart that upholds the Precepts and one that does not.

With this Wisdom, you will be able to embrace those who are struggling with their practice or who lack meditative concentration. You will have the capacity to guide their hearts and actions back toward the path of the Precepts. When your heart is calm, with few ripples and eventually no fluctuations, the Precepts and meditative concentration will flow naturally. Wisdom will then manifest, and you will attain the supreme .
