Teachings from Namo Amituofo:

To feel a sense of weariness for the world is to be truly tired of its illusions and to intentionally distance oneself from them. When we speak of being weary of the world, we mean that one has grown tired of the noisy, chaotic, and deeply polluted environment that defines our current existence. We wish to move far away from these distractions.

The Path of Weariness and Release

If you can look upon the world with clear eyes and witness the myriad sufferings of all beings, if you can personally taste the bitterness of birth, aging, sickness, and death, you will begin to see the truth. You must recognise the illusions that keep us trapped in the cycle of rebirth. These illusions are fuelled by our attachment to wealth, lust, fame, food, and sleep, as well as the of greed, anger, ignorance, arrogance, and doubt. These create the bitter fruits of suffering that we consume every day. Only by recognising these as illusions can you attain true purity and the autonomy to take charge of your own life.

The Illusion of Worldly Attachments

If you have not yet seen the suffering of the world, or if you have not yet tasted the harsh reality of birth, aging, sickness, and death, you may still be infatuated with worldly people, worldly emotions, and worldly affairs. In this state, you remain an ordinary person, bound by the laws of . If you still carry attachments that you cannot let go of, or if you have not yet changed your personality traits, you will find it impossible to truly cultivate a heart that is weary of this world and longs for the of Ultimate Bliss.

Only those who clearly recognise the facts of reality and develop a genuine weariness for this world can truly make the vow to seek the Western Pure Land. This vow must be firm and unshakeable. It must be pure, untainted by external influences, and capable of withstanding any test. When you are no longer attracted to the illusory phenomena of the world or the distractions of modern technology, you have truly developed a heart that is weary of this world and longs for the Western Pure Land. This is the mark of a practitioner who can make diligent practice and achieve spiritual success.

The Clarity of the Awakened Eye

If you practise diligently and achieve the purity that allows your eyes to open, you will be able to see the conditions of the six realms of existence:

  • The Hells: Where beings suffer the intense pain of punishment.
  • The Animal Realm: Where earthly creatures suffer the inability to escape their limited space.
  • The Ghost Realm: Where spirits drift, feeling helpless and without a home.
  • The Heavenly Realm: Where beings enjoy peace and happiness, yet suffer the impermanence of existence; when their are exhausted, they fall into the hells in terror, filled with anger.
  • The Human Realm: Where we are bound by karma to suffer birth, aging, sickness, and death, or to fleetingly enjoy the rewards of past good deeds.
  • The Asura Realm: Where beings possess great power and blessings, yet are plagued by a fierce and violent nature.

These are the sufferings of beings in the six realms who are unable to take charge of their own destiny. If you can observe these truths, your vow to leave this world behind and seek rebirth in the Western Pure Land will become even more firm.
