The Heart-Words of the Buddha: Everything is Mind-Only
Teachings from Namo Amituofo
Recorded and transcribed by Namo Amituofo’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe, January 12, 2025
Words of Namo Amituofo:
Shakyamuni Buddha taught the specifically to address and resolve the myriad sufferings and problems faced by all beings. In the beginning, when Shakyamuni Buddha first turned the wheel of the Dharma, he spoke these teachings orally. There were no written records at that time. It was only after the Buddha entered Parinirvana that five hundred great Arhats gathered to compile his teachings into the sutras we have today.
The Sacred Transmission of the Buddha's Words
The teachings that the World-Honoured One delivered over forty-nine years were preserved through the oral recitation of the Venerable Ananda. These recitations were then verified by the great Arhats to ensure they were entirely accurate and free from error. Only after this rigorous process of verification were the teachings committed to writing to be passed down to future generations. The final character in the title of these texts is the word Sutra. This designation signifies that the text has undergone this sacred process of transmission and preservation, ensuring its authenticity. If a practitioner can study and follow the guidance contained within these sutras, they will surely achieve success in their spiritual journey.
The Gradual Path to
The Dharma taught by the World-Honoured One can be categorised into the and the . However, in truth, all these paths eventually converge into the One Vehicle. The One Vehicle is the Buddha's path, the supreme way to enlightenment. Without the foundational training provided by the Small Vehicle and the Great Vehicle, it would be difficult for a practitioner to attain the maturity required to enter the One Vehicle. Therefore, one must never look down upon or disregard those who follow the Small Vehicle path.
Although practitioners of the Small Vehicle primarily seek their own liberation and may not yet have the expansive vow to save all beings, they still practise according to their conditions. They must also engage in diligent practice to achieve their goals. We should respect the dedication of every practitioner, as each step forward is a step toward the ultimate truth.
The Three Pillars of the Dharma
The term refers to the three great collections of the Buddha's teachings:
- The Sutra Pitaka: This collection contains the Dharma spoken directly by the Buddha, which was recorded and preserved as sutra texts.
- The Vinaya Pitaka: This collection consists of the and rules of conduct established by the Buddha, organised into a structured system of discipline.
- The Abhidharma Pitaka: This collection comprises the profound treatises and commentaries written by the Buddha's disciples and the ancestral masters, which provide deeper analysis and explanation of the sutras and the precepts.
When a practitioner engages in the study of the Dharma, they will often find that these commentaries and treatises are essential. They help the practitioner gain a more profound and nuanced understanding of the sutras. This is especially true when studying the Great Vehicle sutras. The Infinite Life Sutra (The Buddha Speaks the Mahayana, Infinite Life, Adornment, Purity, Impartiality, and Enlightenment Sutra) is a quintessential Great Vehicle text. It is a profound sutra designed specifically to help beings who are walking the to attain Buddhahood.
