The light emanating from of a Buddha is not merely a physical phenomenon. It is the natural result of a long and diligent process of practice. Through this practice, one continuously washes away the accumulated filth and defilements of the body, mind, and spirit. When one finally enters a state of absolute purity and perfect Goodness, where there is not even the slightest trace of contamination or impurity, one is no longer governed by the heavy weight of . Instead, one's true self and original Buddha-nature take full command. It is from this state of total clarity that a perfect, pure, and virtuous light radiates from the body.
Because the Buddha has fully revealed the original face of existence, the spirit becomes clear and bright. The body becomes unobstructed, and every single cell within the physical form undergoes a profound purification, becoming incomparably clear and transparent. To reach such a state, one must first accumulate sufficient merit and virtue. Only when one possesses enough power of merit can one resolve conflicts with others, increase one's own virtuous conduct, and inspire beings to feel and respect, thereby becoming willing to draw near and learn the .
These transformations occur naturally as the body, mind, and spirit become harmonious and at ease. When the entire body is free from all obstructions, it emits a brilliant golden glow, which we call the golden light. As the Universal Buddha, possesses a light of merit that is truly immeasurable. The various names of this Buddha-light represent its diverse functions and capabilities in the world. These include:
These lights shine universally across all worlds in the ten directions. The Buddha-light of Namo Amituofo is truly inconceivable in its depth and reach.
Wherever the Buddha-light shines, those who receive its illumination are blessed by the power of the Buddha. Through this natural process, they are able to resolve disasters and remove defilements. You may wonder why, when the Buddha-light of Namo Amituofo and the light of Practitioner Su shine upon the demon spirits, these spirits often appear to lose all their strength. This occurs because the demon nature within these spirits is exceptionally strong and difficult to transform. The more intense this demon nature is—such as in the case of great demons or demon kings—the more profound the effect of the Buddha-light becomes.
The Buddha-light and energy of Namo Amituofo and Practitioner Su are sufficient to subdue the stubbornness and demon nature of these spirits. As they are bathed in the infinite , Wisdom, purity, joy, and stability contained within this light, they are deeply influenced. They lose their ability to resist and become willing to accept transformation. This is a testament to the inconceivable power and majestic authority of the Buddha-light. Once these spirits enter the Western Land of Dharma Nature, the demon nature within them fades away, and their inherent Goodness is revealed. They are then granted the precious opportunity to chant Namo Amituofo, transition to the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss, and attain Buddhahood.
