Teachings from , recorded and transcribed by Namo Amituofo’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
The Joyful Heart is not merely an emotion; it is an inherent quality of your original, true nature. It is a light that shines brightly within the purity of goodness, yet it is often obscured by the shadows of impurity and negative actions. When you truly understand the nature of this , you will see that it is the natural state of a heart that is in harmony with the .
How do you cultivate this Joyful Heart? It begins with the act of listening to the sutras and hearing the Dharma. When you immerse yourself in the teachings, your spirit is nourished and irrigated, allowing your innate joy to flourish. Conversely, if you choose to follow your own whims and disregard the , you will find yourself trapped in a cycle of worry, bitterness, and discontent. The choice is always yours to make:
The Joyful Heart manifests naturally when you engage in compassionate actions aimed at helping others leave suffering behind and find happiness. This is the essence of the . However, if you allow your past to manifest as physical or mental suffering, you may find yourself overwhelmed by sorrow. When you are caught in the grip of such difficulties, remember that your practice is the only way to break free. Do not let the temporary clouds of karma obscure the eternal sun of your true nature.
Your journey toward becoming an awakened being requires you to walk with steady, grounded steps. When your heart is firm and your practice is consistent, you will be filled with the joy of the Dharma, leading you ever closer to the realisation of your true nature. Consider the difference in your progress:
In your diligent practice, you will inevitably encounter moments of retreat. When this happens, use it as an opportunity for self-reflection and to change your ways. If you advance with persistence, the Joyful Heart will naturally appear. If you become lazy or stagnant, your heart will never find rest, and you will be plagued by restlessness and agitation.
When you face tests and trials, view them as opportunities for breakthrough. If you can overcome these challenges, your spiritual achievements will grow, and you will be filled with the joy of the Dharma. However, if you lose faith during these tests and retreat, all your previous efforts will be in vain. This is a great tragedy for any practitioner.
You must hold a deep, unwavering faith in the Buddha’s teachings, in the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, in the ancestral masters, and in the guidance of your teacher. When you follow these teachings, you will receive the benefits of the Dharma and be filled with joy. If you harbour doubt, you will be unable to follow the path, and you will find it difficult to receive these benefits, ultimately creating more karma for yourself.
Finally, when your confusion is resolved and your thoughts and actions are aligned with the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way, the Joyful Heart will manifest. If you engage in slander or allow your thoughts to deviate from this path, your spiritual achievements will regress, and you will surely reap the bitter fruits of suffering. Always remember to keep your heart pure and your practice diligent.
