The Joyful Heart is one of the : , , and Selfless Giving. In the absolute sense, the Buddha has no mind of His own; He does not cling to personal thoughts or desires. However, to respond to the hearts of all beings and to teach them effectively, the Buddha manifests these Four Immeasurables. They are the natural, inherent qualities of our own hearts and actions.
Although these qualities are naturally present within every one of us, they have been obscured by our long-standing confusion. Through the process of practice and purification, these layers of obstruction are gradually removed, allowing our true nature to shine forth once more. Once you have uncovered this inner light, you must cherish and nurture it carefully, ensuring that it never leaves your heart.
Buddhas and Bodhisattvas possess immense compassion. To help beings find happiness, they cultivate auspicious characteristics. When beings behold the Buddha’s thirty-two marks and eighty signs of excellence, their hearts naturally fill with joy. This joy draws them closer to the Buddha, allowing them to learn the , receive the benefits of the Dharma, and ultimately be saved.
When beings are trapped in suffering and cannot find a way out, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas manifest in a dignified and joyful form. By witnessing this radiant presence, beings find their worries and anxieties melting away. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, in turn, feel great joy when they see that the suffering of beings has been alleviated.
Similarly, when the grievances and resentments between beings are difficult to resolve, the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas manifest their dignified and joyful presence. This helps beings see beyond their anger, allowing their deep-seated resentment and sorrow to be resolved. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas also feel profound joy when they see that such conflicts have been successfully resolved.
You should cultivate the Joyful Heart in various aspects of your life:
When you reach the state of , the Four Immeasurables—Compassion, Joy, and Selfless Giving—will be fully revealed. This is the manifestation of your inner, pure, and good energy radiating outward into the world. Once you have achieved Awakening, the Joyful Heart will naturally and spontaneously manifest in every moment of your life.
