Words of Namo Amituofo:

The Four Elements of Our Physical Vessel

The human body is composed of the four great elements: earth, water, fire, and wind. Earth represents the limbs and the skeletal framework. Water represents the moisture, bodily fluids, and blood within . Fire represents the warmth and the body temperature. Wind represents the flow of breath and the movement of energy. The internal organs reside within these four elements.

The Dimming Shadows of Karmic Debt

When the body appears dark and lustreless, it indicates that the cells and the four elements are manifesting a state of darkness. This may be due to impure energy permeating the entire body, resulting in insufficient energy and a weak breath. This is especially evident in the head, face, eyes, ears, nose, lips, shoulders, and back, and is frequently seen in those who are ageing, suffering from severe illness, or approaching the end of their life. and attached spirits are often seen gathering in large numbers within such a body.

When the body appears dark, the spirit often manifests as withered, powerless, and grey. The heart, in turn, reflects a state of depression, frustration, and hopelessness. Those who are consumed by fierce anger also manifest a dark body, much like the demon crowds.

The Luminous Radiance of a Pure Heart

When the body glows with a bright light, it indicates that the cells are revitalised. The four elements are in a state of brightness and fullness, and the body’s energy is abundant. This is especially visible in the head, face, eyes, ears, nose, lips, shoulders, and back. Such radiance is commonly found in those who possess a simple, compassionate, kind, and pure heart, such as newborn infants and practitioners.

For a practitioner, this brightness is not influenced by age; it reflects their level of practice, virtue, and inner cultivation. When one practises diligently, the light of the spirit naturally permeates the physical form.

Beyond the Veil of the Physical Form

For Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and those who have realised their true nature, they have already removed defilements and attained purity, having successfully transformed their . They are free from the karmic traces of karmic creditors and attached spirits, so their bodies and spirits appear transparent and luminous. Even if they take on suffering on behalf of all beings, their hearts and spirits remain undisturbed. While the physical body may experience pain, their inner state remains unmoved, and their spirit continues to shine with a transparent, brilliant light.

I have briefly described the relationship between the body’s light and darkness and the state of the heart and spirit. I hope that all of you will move forward towards this radiant state of being.
