The Limitation of Human Thoughts
Teachings from Namo Amituofo
Dharma Assembly for Disaster Mitigation and Blessing, 6 October 2019
The Illusion of Knowing
Knowing and are often defined by the presence of thoughts. These thoughts arise constantly, shaping our perception of the world. In this world, we rely on thoughts to navigate daily affairs. While they may resolve immediate, practical problems, they are not the ultimate solution. They are inherently limited.
The solutions derived from thoughts are often one-sided and incomplete. They fail to grasp the totality of a situation, filtered through a limited perspective. We believe we see the whole, yet we only perceive a fragment.
The Fragility of Subjective Thought
What is a thought? It is a complex mix of the changing and the unchanging. Thoughts are subject to impermanence and carry many issues of bias and correctness. Because thoughts arise from the individual heart, they cannot represent the true meaning of existence.
If people in this world act solely based on their thoughts, they are acting from a place of subjectivity, attachment, and personal opinion. Even if these thoughts are based on seasoned experience, they remain volatile and subject to change. They are like fleeting clouds in a light breeze.
Transcending the Ego
To be truly wise, one must remain faithful to the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way. We must let go of the ego-driven state of the 'I' that insists on its own importance. Following the Buddha's words is far superior to relying on the shifting nature of our own thoughts.
I counsel you, my child: do not indulge in excessive imagination. You must learn to quiet your heart and stop these thoughts; only then will there be benefit. When you cling to the 'I,' you create obstacles for yourself, preventing the light of your true nature from shining through.
The Path of True Wisdom
By letting go of subjective thoughts, you open the door to a deeper understanding. Instead of relying on the limited, changing nature of human intellect, we turn to the eternal wisdom of the Buddha. This is how we leave suffering behind and find true happiness. May you find the stillness within, where the truth resides, undisturbed by the noise of the wandering mind.
