is a natural, inherent quality of your true nature. It is not something that you need to acquire from the outside, nor is it a quality that must be imported into your life. It is already there, waiting within you.
The Veils of the Mind
However, because your true nature has been covered by layers of ignorance, this innate goodness and compassion remain hidden. They are obscured, unable to manifest in your daily life. In their place, a sense of selfishness and self-interest has taken root, burying your original, pure nature beneath the weight of worldly concerns.
Following this, the : Greed, Anger, Ignorance, Arrogance, and Doubt, and the : Wealth, Sexual Pleasure, Fame, Food, and Sleep, begin to dominate your thoughts and actions. These poisons and desires create endless cravings and demands within the people of this world. You become attached to external pursuits and the satisfaction of these fleeting desires. Consequently, your manifests, leading to various forms of suffering.
The Cycle of Suffering
The suffering of birth, aging, sickness, and death is the direct manifestation of the karma you have accumulated in the past and the negative actions you have committed in this life. Because people in this world are unable to transform their karma, they find themselves helpless. They allow their karma to dictate their lives, leaving their body, mind, and spirit in a state of constant pain. It is difficult for them to find peace, and even harder to escape the cycle of karmic suffering.
The Path of Transformation
The reason the Buddha’s teachings are practised in this world is to save all beings from the root of their suffering. The source of this suffering lies within the heart. Therefore, the study and practice of the Buddha’s teachings are designed to tame this heart, bringing it into a state of balance, peace, and meditative concentration.
To tame your heart, you must engage in the following practices:
- Listen to sutras and hear the : This allows you to understand the truth of existence.
- Engage in diligent practice: Through consistent effort, you can identify your past wrong views, incorrect perspectives, and inappropriate behaviours.
- Correct your actions: You must let go of the wrongdoings of your Body, Speech, and Mind, and adjust yourself back to the right path.
- Address your shortcomings: You must actively work to fill the gaps in your understanding and character.
to the Truth
As a practitioner, you must see through the truth of material desires and karma. You must learn to let go of the emotions, desires, and other illusory appearances that you currently mistake for reality. It is essential that you overcome the desires of and the illusion that the body is real or that it belongs to you. Do not cling to the body or hold onto your many sensory . Only by doing this can you truly make good use of this temporary physical form.
By using this body as a vessel, you can nurture compassion and wisdom, elevate your spirit, and rediscover your true nature. One who can do this is truly a wise person.
The Great Vow of Compassion
Compassion is the heart and action of the practitioner. You should make the Great Vow to save yourself and all other beings, and then put this vow into actual practice. Throughout this process, your unwavering faith in the Buddha is the primary reason your vow can be fulfilled. When your faith is true, your vow becomes a powerful force for transformation.
