The Mysteries of Space and the Work of Practitioner Su
Teachings from Master Xuanzang
Recorded on March 11, 2019

Within the vast expanse of space exist worlds unseen by the human eye, containing many things that remain unknown to most. Even when people acknowledge the existence of multiple dimensions, they understand only a fraction of the truth. This is why these realms are often shrouded in mystery. Within the six realms of existence, there exist various distinct dimensions. Due to the laws of and cause and effect, these spaces often intersect. This is one of the true laws of the world. Understanding these laws helps one to break through delusion, discrimination, and attachment.
The Veiled Tapestry of Intersecting Realms
The human world is one of the six realms. Through the cycle of rebirth across accumulated lifetimes, every being has lived in the space of every realm. Beings in the animal realm, for instance, possess physical bodies just as humans do. Because of the pull of karma and cause and effect, they can influence one another, leading to an intersection of their respective spaces. However, the level of the dimension occupied by humans is higher than that of the animal realm. Humans can influence and change the lives of these beings. This influence is also governed by the laws of karma and cause and effect, such as the habits associated with a non-vegetarian diet versus a vegetarian one.
In truth, regardless of which realm a being belongs to, there are infinite dimensions in existence. Practitioner Su often tells the disciples: "Someone has entered another dimension!" This occurs because the spirit of the being in that dimension is in sync with the disciple. The disciple's three hun souls and seven po souls are drawn into that dimension, where they begin to move and act. Because every person's level of awareness differs, some may feel this occurrence, while others remain unaware. In some cases, the soul or spirit can return to on its own, though the time taken varies. In other cases, the soul or spirit does not return and remains trapped in that dimension. This results in the human body losing a portion of its soul or spirit, leading to a state of spiritual deficiency.
The Compassionate Reach of Practitioner Su
Because Practitioner Su has reached , he possesses the energy and the vow to save beings. When he strikes the great chime, this energy and vow are transmitted through the sound into that dimension. It breaks through the barriers of space, allowing the souls he wishes to save to follow his vow—which is to say, to follow his intent—and enter the chime. They are then brought back to the human dimension and returned to their original bodies. This process is truly profound and inconceivable.
In reality, given the energy of Practitioner Su's Awakening, his vow to save beings, and the and merits he has accumulated from the past to the present, he can break through space and invite a soul back to its body the moment his vow and mental note arise. This is similar to ; it does not require specific rituals or preparations. Just as when he invites spirits to come forth, Practitioner Su can strike the table as if striking a chime, allowing the spirits to enter the of Ultimate Bliss. However, to inspire the hearts of the people, to allow the public to have faith, and to enable the fourfold assembly of disciples to participate in these processes together, rituals such as striking the great chime or holding a assembly are necessary.
The Wholeness of the Soul
The spirit can be considered the master of the body. A complete spirit requires the presence of the three hun souls and seven po souls. If any soul or spirit is missing, the spirit is incomplete. At such a time, if one wishes to purify and elevate the spirit, the results are limited because the spirit is deficient. The ability to focus and concentrate becomes difficult, which leads to challenges in learning. If one wishes to reach Awakening, it becomes even more difficult.
If a person's body suffers from the loss or deficiency of these souls, the body may be taken over by or attached spirits. At this point, the person loses the ability to be the master of their own life and becomes a tool for karmic creditors or attached spirits to settle debts, seek revenge, or repay kindness. Generally, people find it difficult to discover or know of this situation. Only those whose "eyes of practice" are open can see that the body is not being controlled by the person themselves. Even if they see it, they may lack the ability to resolve the conflict, or the situation may recur after a temporary resolution. Thus, such circumstances continue to happen repeatedly. Practitioner Su, however, can not only see and know these things, but he can also resolve them and send the beings to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. He is truly a comprehensive practitioner. Those who can encounter such true cultivation and genuine ability should truly cherish and grasp this Causal Condition and study diligently.
Awakening to the True Self
Therefore, in this illusory world, when learning the Buddha's teachings and engaging in practice, one must be vigilant at all times. Use this false body to pursue True Cultivation. Correct your own behaviour, never depart from the righteous path, and follow the Universal Principle, the Truth, and the Right Way. By overcoming the various problems and difficulties in your practice, you will find your true self. Only when you can truly be the master of your own life can you save yourself and others, and attain the true coolness and ease of the spirit.
Recorded by the Buddha's disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
