The Essence of the Nirvana Mind

Nirvana is a term that signifies the ultimate state of the Buddha, the Tathagata, and the World-Honoured One as they depart from the worldly realm. In this discourse, the Nirvana Mind refers to the heart of Buddhahood—the very essence of the Buddha-heart itself. We must ask ourselves: do the students of the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre truly possess this heart of Buddhahood? Since you have entered this sacred sanctuary, have you truly awakened the aspiration to attain Buddhahood within this Buddha-land?

The vow to attain Buddhahood is of paramount importance. You must make this sincere vow to have any opportunity to reach , to realise your true nature, and to ultimately attain Buddhahood. Every single being possesses this original nature, and every single being has the potential to become a Buddha. When you are able to let go of your attachments, you can achieve the Buddha's path. By learning from the Buddha, becoming like the Buddha, and embodying the Buddha, you will attain the Nirvana path—the great path that leads to the ultimate liberation of Buddhahood.

The Formless Nature of the Buddha

The Buddha comes into this world to teach all beings how to leave suffering behind and to assist them in learning the path to Buddhahood. The Buddha manifests in a physical form only to help the bodies and minds of beings find peace. However, if you believe that seeing the physical form is the same as seeing the Buddha, you are mistaken. In truth, the Buddha is:

  • Formless: Beyond the limitations of physical appearance.
  • Heartless: Free from the attachments of a worldly mind.
  • Non-abiding: Not fixed to any specific place or condition.
  • Selfless: Completely devoid of ego.
  • Without a self: Having transcended the illusion of the individual self.

The form of the Buddha appears only because of the needs of sentient beings. To abide in the Nirvana path is to enter the state of true stillness, where the Buddha's actions are solely the actions of saving all beings.

Connecting with the Buddha-Heart

The heart of Buddhahood is the heart that seeks to save all beings, helping them leave suffering behind and find liberation from the cycle of rebirth. All Buddhas walk the same path; Namo Amituofo embodies this, and the hearts of all Buddhas are identical. Once you realise your true nature and attain Buddhahood, you will naturally possess this same heart. Your true self is inherently in sync with the Nirvana Mind and the Buddha-heart; it is something you have possessed from the very beginning. The Nirvana Mind is without beginning or end.

When you chant the sacred name of Namo Amituofo, you are directly connecting with the heart of the Buddha. If you chant with the right mindset, you will naturally be in sync with the Buddha and receive the power of the Buddha's . You must chant with:

  • A heart of : Wishing for the liberation of all beings.
  • A heart of : Finding happiness in the practice of the .
  • A heart of gratitude: Appreciating the opportunity to practise.
  • The virtues of letting go: Releasing attachments to the material world.
  • Wisdom: Understanding the nature of reality.
  • Fierce diligence: Maintaining a steady and courageous practice.

The Path of Transformation

Conversely, if you chant while harbouring the or the , your practice becomes a source of negativity. Specifically, chanting while influenced by Greed, Anger, Ignorance, Arrogance, and Doubt, or while preoccupied with wealth, lust, fame, food, and sleep, will prevent you from being in sync with the Buddha. If you are instead in sync with the path of demons, the Buddha's path will be difficult to attain. It would be a great tragedy to encounter Namo Amituofo and enter the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in this life, only to miss the opportunity for true transformation.

While you still possess this human body, you must be skilful at transformation. You must learn to transform your , make sincere vows, and enter the Nirvana path with the Nirvana Mind. This is the vision that all students of the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre have the opportunity to realise. Namo Amituofo.
