The Illusion of Separation

Words of Namo Amituofo, recorded by Chief Writer Venerable HaiZe.

How many people and events do you distinguish between 'the other' and '' in your daily life? We often perceive the ups and downs of human relationships as separate from ourselves, yet they are all governed by and the causes and effects. If you look at these interactions with a calm and peaceful heart, you will realise that both the other and the self are made of the same flesh and blood. Both are accumulations of Goodness and evil deeds, and both possess a sensitive, innate awareness. However, this awareness is often covered by layers of confusion, making it difficult to see clearly. In truth, the hearts of the self and the other are the same; it is only because of our confusion and the karmic seeds we have planted that we appear different, and our actions—whether Goodness or evil—diverge.

The Cycle of Rebirth

We have wandered through the six realms of existence for countless lifetimes. The cycle of birth, aging, sickness, death, along with the suffering and distress that accompany them, are all intertwined with our past deeds. If you feel that you have met someone before, know that it was merely in the dreams of the past. When we meet again in this life, what will happen? It depends entirely on our vows and our diligent practice. Will we allow ourselves to be led by our back into the six realms of existence, or will we practise with persistence to transform karma and see their true nature?

The Power of Purification

Please use the chanting of the Buddha-name to purify your heart. Use it to purify the relationship between the other and the self, and to cleanse the pollution and evil within. You must engage in diligent practice and never stop. By doing so, you will eventually return to your original true self. The distinction between 'the other' and 'the self' does not exist in the ultimate reality. It does not exist between this world and other lands, between the vast void and the galaxy, or between the six realms of existence and the four holy states. It is not limited by time or space. In truth, there is no 'other' and no 'self'—all is one.

Realising the Truth

This is the ultimate truth of the universe. If you can realise this through , open your mind-capacity to embrace all beings, and use Wisdom (Prajna) to untie the knots of worry and attachment, you will be a true disciple of the Buddha. By following the Buddha's path, you will be able to break through your limitations, see their true nature, and fulfil your potential. Namo Amituofo.
