The Spectrum of Suffering in the Ten Directions

In the vast expanse of the Ten Directions of the Realm, we find a multitude of beings existing in various states of . Aside from those in the human world and the animal realm, who possess physical bodies, the majority of beings exist as spirits without a body. These spirit realms are diverse, yet they are all bound by the laws of and the cycle of rebirth.

Among those with physical bodies, the beings in the animal realm often endure the most harrowing experiences. Many are trapped as prisoners under the blade, left to be slaughtered, cooked, and consumed. Their physical bodies endure suffering that is akin to the torments of the hells. When we consider the differences between the Three Evil Realms, we see that the animal realm is a place where the suffering of , the mind, and the spirit are all concentrated into a single, agonizing moment. In contrast, the realms of hungry ghosts and hell-beings primarily experience suffering through their consciousness, manifesting in various and mental afflictions.

The Burden of the Human Condition

The human realm is unique, for it serves as a place where beings are driven by their karma. It is a place where we encounter our , coming together to settle the debts of the past. Because of this, human life is defined by the four great sufferings: birth, aging, sickness, and death. These four sufferings are the hallmarks of our existence, and they demonstrate why it is so difficult for us to take charge of our own destiny within the cycle of rebirth.

To truly leave this cycle behind, one must engage in dedicated practice to transform one's karma. When the heavy weight of karma is transformed, one can see their true nature and finally be free from the endless suffering of reincarnation. For those in the human and animal realms, the path to liberation begins with listening to sutras and hearing the Dharma. By understanding the underlying principles of existence and recognising the true nature of suffering, one can develop a heart of renunciation. This heart, turned toward practice and purification, is the only way to transform one's karma and see their true nature.

The Power of Listening to the Dharma

However, for those in the animal realm, this path is fraught with difficulty. Their spirits are often clouded by ignorance and confusion, and their circumstances present two major obstacles: they lack the opportunity to listen to sutras and hear the Dharma in their daily lives, and even if they were to hear the teachings, they would find it difficult to comprehend or grasp the profound meaning behind them. Yet, for animals with higher spiritual sensitivity and those whose spiritual foundations are now fully matured, hearing the Dharma can bring a measure of purification. Even if they only understand a small portion of the teachings, they can receive the benefits of the Dharma, which allows them to experience a little less suffering in their current state.

The most rapid and simple method for any being to listen to sutras and hear the Dharma and achieve purification is to listen to the name of Namo Amituofo. When the name is played continuously, it enters the ears of all beings, allowing them to receive the of the Buddha. Whether in this life, the next, or over many lifetimes, they will eventually reach a point where they can be saved through .

The Magnificence of Chao Du

Even more magnificent is the opportunity for spirits to receive Chao Du from Practitioner Su. For animals, insects, earthly creatures, and all manner of living beings, this grace allows them to shed the outer garment of their . They are restored to a human-like form, their spirits enter the Buddha-light, and they are guided to the of Ultimate Bliss or to the higher realms of humans and heavens.

While the Ten Directions of the Dharma Realm—including the heavens, the realms of the asuras, the vast reaches of the universe, the Milky Way, and the various spaces within the Earth, the deep seas, and the skies—are filled with spirits, there is a vital distinction to be made. Spirits without a body, even if they hear the Dharma, lack the physical agency to transform their destiny. It is only through the actions of a physical body that one can truly transform, purify, and see their true nature. Therefore, cherish your human form and use it wisely to practise the teachings of Namo Amituofo.
