The Path of Persistence in Practice
Teachings from Bodhisattva Ashvaghosha
Recorded on February 18, 2019
On the path of practice, if you wish to achieve success, you must possess the power of persistence. It is essential to maintain your practice every single day without fail. Within this persistence, faith is of the utmost importance. You must realise that to become a Buddha, one must engage in Buddha-work. By learning from the Buddha and performing Buddha-work, you can eventually attain Buddhahood yourself.
The Foundation of Faith and Service
Buddha-work encompasses several vital activities that serve as the foundation for your spiritual growth. These include:
- Saving beings: Developing the heart to rescue all suffering beings from the cycle of rebirth.
- Serving the community: Offering your time and energy to help others in their journey.
- Giving talks: Sharing the teachings to help others resolve their doubts.
- Guiding others: Assisting people to break through delusion and attain .
All of these activities must begin with the initial aspiration to serve. How can you maintain this long-term heart? It begins with having faith in the Buddha's teachings and faith in your own potential. You must understand that practice is a daily commitment, and you must persist in walking this path every day of your life.
Navigating the Cycles of Practice
The process of practice is rarely a straight line; it is natural to experience periods of progress followed by moments of retreat. When you understand that this ebb and flow is simply a part of the process, it becomes much easier to return to your initial aspiration. Having a firm and resolute initial aspiration provides you with the endurance needed to face any challenge.
When external conditions arise to test your resolve, you will be able to return to that original heart. From within that aspiration, you will learn how to save beings, how to listen to the sutras, how to perform prostrations, and how to recite the sutras with a sincere heart.
Expanding the Mind-Capacity
Everything you do in your daily life can be transformed into Buddha-work, and every action can be a means to save beings. When your mind-capacity is broad and expansive, there is no room for a narrow, selfish sense of self. There is only the spirit of learning and the desire to emulate the actions of the Buddha. When you live in this way, you will surely find , and with that joy, and Wisdom will naturally manifest.
The Power of Continuous Recitation
Consider the practice of chanting Namo Amituofo. Whether you chant one hundred times a day or more, the most important factor is whether you do so without interruption. You must sustain this practice every single day. This is the attainment in practice. Whether you achieve success depends entirely on your own firm faith and your persistent, continuous effort. This dedication will lead to the purification of your mental notes, the purification of your body, speech, and mind, and you will ultimately attain peace and the joy of the Dharma.
Keys to Success in Practice
To all the Bodhisattvas in the Western Land of Dharma Nature, remember that listening to the sutras and hearing the Dharma is a way to adjust your own perspectives. If you hold onto your aspiration and persist without ceasing, you will achieve success. In particular, when you listen to the Dharma talks given by Practitioner Su, you will more clearly understand that changing your personality and subduing your habits are the keys to practice. If you follow these keys, your success in practice is certain, and the path to becoming a Buddha is within your reach.
