The Path of Transforming Karma: Teachings from Namo Amituofo

Recorded and transcribed by Namo Amituofo’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe.
On this day, the third of January, 2025, we reflect upon the essential nature of our spiritual journey. The we accumulate through our Body, Speech, and Mind often binds us to the cycle of suffering. To break free, we must understand the nature of our actions and the path toward purification.
From the Shadows of Negativity to the Light of Goodness
The negative karma we create through our Body, Speech, and Mind manifests as the Ten Evils. These actions keep us trapped in the cycle of rebirth. They are:
- Body: Killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct.
- Speech: Divisive speech, harsh speech, lying, and idle chatter.
- Mind: Greed, anger, and delusion.
Through diligent practice and sincere purification, we must transform these negative tendencies into the Ten Goods. This is the foundational step of our practice:
- Body: Refraining from killing, stealing, and sexual misconduct.
- Speech: Refraining from divisive speech, harsh speech, lying, and idle chatter.
- Mind: Replacing greed with generosity, anger with kindness, and delusion with wisdom.
Once we have established this foundation, we enter into the pure practice of chanting Namo Amituofo. This is how we create pure karma, which is the ultimate goal of our spiritual life.
The Alchemy of the Heart and Body
This entire sequence is the process of transforming karma: moving from evil to goodness, and finally, entering into purity. How do we begin this transformation? It starts with the adjustment of our heart and our body.
To adjust the heart, we must consciously shift our focus. We must move away from selfish, evil thoughts and cultivate thoughts of universal goodness. We enter into a pure heart by chanting Namo Amituofo in every moment. Furthermore, we must realise the vital importance of changing our personality traits. If we do not address the root of our afflictions, our practice will remain superficial.
To adjust , we must transition from selfish actions to actions that benefit all beings. We must put our practice into action by changing our personality, ensuring that we do not give rise to false thoughts or unnecessary afflictions. By chanting Namo Amituofo, we ensure that our actions remain pure.
The Harmonious Resonance of the True Self
When the heart and body are successfully adjusted, our spirit will naturally follow. We enter into a state of pure spirit—a spirit that is both pure and good, existing in perfect harmony with the heart. When our mental notes are adjusted in the present moment, the Buddha-heart manifests. When our physical actions are adjusted, the Buddha-actions are revealed. When our spirit is transformed, we see our true nature.
This adjustment of our Body-Mind-Spirit can be achieved in this very lifetime, or it may remain unfulfilled. It depends entirely on the quality of our Faith, Vows, and Practice. We must ask ourselves: Do we truly have faith in the Buddha? Do we truly vow to seek rebirth in the and become a Buddha? Are we engaged in diligent practice?
Faith in the Buddha is the foundation. Through diligent practice, our vow to reach the Western Pure Land and attain Buddhahood will surely be fulfilled. Let us cherish every moment and continue our journey with a sincere heart.
