Words of Namo Amituofo, recorded and transcribed by Namo Amituofo’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe, on the first of September, 2024.

The Foundation of the Six Perfections

If you are a practitioner who wishes to make true progress, you must learn to live according to the Six Perfections. These are the essential pillars of your spiritual journey:

  • Generosity: Offering your resources, time, and self to benefit others.
  • Discipline: Maintaining a pure conduct that aligns with the Truth.
  • Patience: Remaining calm and steady even when faced with adversity.
  • Diligent practice: Applying yourself with unwavering effort and consistency.
  • Meditation: Keeping the mind focused and undisturbed by external phenomena.
  • Wisdom: Cultivating the deep insight that sees through the illusions of the world.

When you integrate these six practices into your daily life, your heart will naturally become as still as a calm lake, free from the ripples of agitation. In this state, you will find yourself filled with . When these six practices are perfected, the Buddha’s path is achieved.

Maintaining Stillness Amidst Change

If you truly desire to become an awakened being, you must understand how to handle the changing circumstances of your life. Regardless of how the external world shifts, how people treat you, or how they may oppose or contradict your efforts, you must respond with absolute stillness.

The most important priority is to ensure that your heart remains undisturbed. You must strive to keep your original nature pure and clear. When you encounter challenges, do not let them stir the waters of your mind. By maintaining this inner purity, you protect the sanctity of your practice.

Offering to the Dharma

There is a profound level of practice where you offer your entire being to the Buddha’s teachings and the . When you truly offer your body and mind to serve the infinite suffering beings across the universe, you transcend the limitations of the physical self.

In this state of , you no longer experience personal suffering or physical sensations as obstacles. You are simply living the vows you have made. Within this state of living the vows, you will find that you are constantly filled with Dharma joy. It is within this profound peace and joy that your spiritual achievements will advance rapidly.

Measuring Your Spiritual Progress

You should always be grateful for the people and situations that provide you with the opportunity to train your heart. If you can respond with and endure difficulties without feeling disturbed, you have taken a significant step forward in your practice. However, if you encounter people or situations that cause your heart to fluctuate or become agitated, it is a sign that your practice has not yet deepened.

To determine whether your practice is advancing, remaining stagnant, or regressing, you must look at your own conduct:

  • Are you strictly observing the without violation?
  • Do you possess the meditative concentration necessary to face challenges with a steady mind?
  • Is your Wisdom growing through your daily experiences?

True peace and Dharma joy are visible in the life of a practitioner who has mastered these qualities. They are seen in the one who practises no-self, who engages in broad Generosity, who maintains perfect Discipline, who embodies Patience without resentment or regret, who is diligent and fearless, who remains unmoved even when the world around them changes, and who allows the light of Wisdom to shine forth clearly. Namo Amituofo.
