's discourse:

In this world, many people possess exceptional talents and have achieved significant success in their professional or personal lives. However, when these individuals embark upon the path of spiritual practice, they often find it incredibly difficult to let go of the worldly methods they have relied upon for so long. Over the years, they have accumulated a complex set of mental habits that now act as barriers to their spiritual growth.

The Weight of Worldly Accomplishment

These barriers often manifest as deeply ingrained patterns of thought and behaviour, including:

  • A rigid insistence on one's own opinions, ideas, and methods.
  • A lingering sense of superiority over others.
  • A strong attachment to the ego, which manifests as stubbornness and self-centredness.
  • Deeply rooted personal habits and character traits that have become second nature.

When these traits are brought into the environment of spiritual practice, they create the very conditions that allow to manifest. This is why some practitioners find themselves struggling with spiritual attachment, or even feeling influenced by external negative forces. In the past, these traits were necessary for your survival in a competitive society. You developed them to highlight your capabilities, secure your livelihood, and provide for your family and children. You did what was necessary to stand out, to gain recognition, and to build a stable life.

The Trap of Ego and Attachment

However, the situation changes entirely when you enter the path of practice. As you grow older, these personality traits and habits often become more rigid, making them increasingly difficult to soften or remove. Because these efforts were originally focused on , the family, and the children, they are fundamentally rooted in personal desire and emotional attachment. From the perspective of true spiritual practice, actions, words, and thoughts driven by these motivations are clouded by impurity and turbidity. They are manifestations of karma that attract and attached spirits, and in severe cases, they leave one vulnerable to the influence of demon crowds.

Transforming the Heart for the Greater Good

If you wish to progress, you must learn to transform your mindset. You must take those same talents and capabilities that once served your personal interests and redirect them toward a higher purpose. This means:

  • Working without the desire for personal gain or recognition.
  • Letting go of the need to prove that your abilities are superior to those of others.
  • Releasing the mind from the cycles of comparison, jealousy, and the fear of loss.
  • Devoting your thoughts, words, and actions entirely to the benefit of all beings and the Hsiang Kuang Buddhist Centre.

By cultivating a mind that does not cling to its own views, you begin to open your heart. You learn to be considerate, to expand your mind-capacity, and to embrace the shortcomings of others with . This transformation not only changes your personality and habits but also allows you to contribute your unique skills to the collective strength of the community.

The Path to True Purification

A vital point for every practitioner is the necessity of having a firm vow and a genuine willingness to break through your own obstacles. You must be prepared to set aside personal selfishness and the tendency to react with anger when things do not go your way. To achieve this, you must commit to the following:

  • Attending daily practice sessions with sincerity.
  • Diligently listening to sutras and hearing the to clarify your understanding.
  • Raising your vow to face and overcome states of or mental interference.

Only through this dedicated effort can you achieve the true effect of purifying , heart, and spirit. It is through your own sincerity that you receive the and support of the Buddha, the strength of the teachers, and the assistance of Practitioner Su in the work of . This is the only way to break through current states of confusion, to clear the space around you, and to reduce or even eliminate the interference of karmic creditors, attached spirits, and demon crowds.

Always remember that your own effort and the strength of your vow must come first; only then can the power of the Buddha, the teachers, and Practitioner Su truly be of help to you. I hope that all my children can understand this truth and put it into actual practice. Only then will you be able to receive the true and lasting benefits of being here at Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre.
