The Perils of Greed
Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju
Second Session of the Thrice Yearning Ceremony, 5 May 2019
The of the Heart
Greed, anger, delusion, arrogance, and doubt—these are the five poisons that plague the human heart. They are simple to recite, yet they are incredibly difficult to overcome in our daily lives. We must treat these as strict , for they are obstacles that we must not allow to take root in our practice. If we wish to walk the Buddha's path, we must be vigilant against these tendencies.
The Fleeting Nature of Emotion
Emotional attachments are never permanent. No matter how deep the connection, there will eventually come a time of separation. If your love is rooted in greed, any change in that relationship will only bring sharp pain and suffering to your heart. Affection is merely a temporary experience in this life, yet it is a powerful force that keeps us reincarnated, making it difficult to escape the cycle of suffering.
If you are practising the Buddha's path, you must learn to transform your emotional entanglements into affinity. By shifting your focus from personal desire to the shared pursuit of the Truth, you can turn a source of suffering into a source of liberation.
The Futility of Material Attachment
A miser who hoards wealth is merely a slave to their possessions. When the time comes to depart from this world, not a single cent can be taken with them. Your descendants may find use for what you leave behind, but it will not benefit your own spiritual journey. If you truly wish to accumulate merit, you should practise Generosity (Giving) instead. Wealth is like the wind; it comes and goes, but the merit of giving remains with your true nature forever.
The Path to
Greed for fame stains the heart, making it nearly impossible to walk the righteous path with a clear mind. Similarly, greed for food harms and often involves the act of killing, which creates heavy karmic debt that must eventually be repaid. Even the greed for sleep can lead to a life spent in a daze, where precious time is wasted in a state of unconsciousness.
If you cling to these forms of greed, you risk falling into the ghost realm, where the suffering is profound and the path to liberation is obscured. Why would you choose such a difficult path? You must resolve to leave all forms of greed behind. Only when you have purified your heart of these attachments will you finally have the opportunity to realise your true nature and become an awakened being. This message was recorded by the chief writer, Venerable HaiZe.
