In the Gate, the concept of the power of the state of deep peace and wisdom refers specifically to the . This is the manifestation of deep, meditative concentration, a state where the heart and mind are no longer swayed by external conditions or worldly disturbances.
There is a profound saying: The power of the state of deep peace and wisdom exhausts confusion and eliminates all faults. This means that the merit and virtue derived from the Buddha-Recitation Samadhi possess the power to sever our deep-seated ignorance and confusion, allowing our past faults and karmic burdens to be thoroughly purified.
This power of the state of deep peace and wisdom is known as the King of the states of deep peace and wisdom. It is the supreme state because the magnificent merit and virtue of the Forty-eight Great Vows of Namo Amituofo are all contained within the Holy Name itself. The majestic power of the Buddha is infused into this Name. Therefore, when you recite the Holy Name of Namo Amituofo, if you can maintain continuous chanting without interruption, you will surely receive magnificent benefits from the Dharma.
The Buddha-Recitation Samadhi signifies that your practice has reached a level of true accomplishment. It is a state of chanting without chanting, and of non-chanting while still chanting. At this stage, your recitation is no longer hindered by external interference. The Holy Name arises naturally and continuously from within your heart, orbiting your entire being, leaving your mind as still and calm as water without waves.
This occurs because, through the practice of chanting, you receive the of the Buddha. This power allows you to subdue the three great obstacles: delusion, discrimination, and attachment. By continuing this practice, you do not merely subdue these obstacles; you eventually sever them entirely. When this power of the state of deep peace and wisdom is achieved, you enter the state of wisdom.
When this wisdom manifests, it provides immense assistance to your journey of realising your true nature and attaining Buddhahood. In this state, you gain the ability to understand the profound philosophy of the Sutras and the Buddha’s teachings the moment you hear or read them. The power of the state of deep peace and wisdom ensures that your confusion is cut off and your past faults do not manifest again.
This is the pure and virtuous power inherent in the Holy Name of Namo Amituofo. It performs the work of purification, ensuring that confusion is not allowed to arise and that old faults are not allowed to reappear. The state of deep peace and wisdom gained through chanting is a level of skill that every diligent practitioner should strive to attain. When this power is present, your mind will not be inverted or confused at the time of death. Because your mind is clear and focused, you will be able to remain single-mindedly devoted to reciting the Holy Name, thereby receiving the guidance of Namo Amituofo to be reborn in the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss.
The benefits of chanting are too numerous to fully describe, but you must practise it sincerely. If you do so, you will certainly gain profound results through the Buddha's blessings. The primary reason for bringing this power of the state of deep peace and wisdom into your life is to "arouse the mind and single-mindedly recite Namo Amituofo."
Arousing the Bodhi mind is an essential requirement for anyone moving from the path into the supreme One Vehicle path to Buddhahood. Without arousing the Bodhi mind, one cannot attain Buddhahood. No matter how much you recite the Buddha's name, if your heart is not aligned with the Buddha-heart and the Buddha-vow, your practice remains superficial. The Holy Vows of Namo Amituofo were made specifically to save countless suffering beings. Those who align their own vows with the Buddha's will surely receive the full support of the Buddha's power. For those who have truly aroused the Bodhi mind, whether you are diligently chanting, performing prostrations, or reciting the Sutras, you will undoubtedly reap a great harvest of wisdom and peace.
