The Precious Opportunity of the Physical Body
Teachings from Amitabha Buddha
Recorded and transcribed by Namo Amituofo’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe on 29 November 2024
The Precious Vessel and the Wandering Spirit
The true value of the human world lies in the possession of a physical body. This body is a temporary vessel, yet it serves a profound purpose: it allows you to borrow the false to cultivate the true. You must use this physical form to engage in diligent practice. Your goal is to remove all impurities and reveal the inherent purity within. Do not allow yourself to be stained by the world again. Through constant purification and the willingness to let go of attachments, you elevate the quality of your spirit. When you reach a state of pure goodness and absolute clarity, you will finally see your true self.
If you truly understood the suffering of those who no longer possess a physical body, you would cherish the time you have now. Spirits often drift in a state of aimless wandering, lacking any place of refuge. They exist in a different space, unable to enter the lives of the living. They can see their family members and loved ones, yet those loved ones cannot see them. Even when their hearts are filled with agony and their spirits are in deep distress, they may cry out for help, but there is no one to hear them. Why not take advantage of the time you have now, while you still possess a body? You must regulate your heart, nurture your spirit, and refine your conduct. When your heart is good, pure, and clear, you enter a state of profound wisdom.
Transforming and the Buddha Within
While you have a physical body, you are capable of accomplishing many great things. You can choose to do good, think good thoughts, and speak good words. Now is the time to transform your karma. You must be active and diligent in your efforts to dissolve your spiritual obstacles. Do not let your daily practice be interrupted. You must chant the name of Namo Amituofo again and again. Through this constant recitation, you will awaken your true self—the within.
Do not seek the Buddha far away, for the Buddha is already within your heart. If you look for the Buddha outside of yourself, you will return empty-handed, for you will not find Him there. Instead, seek the Amitabha Buddha within your own heart. When you find Him, the light of your true self will shine throughout your entire body. Your very pores will become transparent and radiate a brilliant, boundless light. The cycle of rebirth is driven by deep-seated karma, and the suffering of old age and sickness is the result of actions taken over countless aeons. We have been reincarnated through endless cycles of life and death, carrying the seeds of both good and evil within this body.
The Responsibility of the Living
It is during this time, while you possess a physical body, that you create either good or negative karma. It is also during this time that you have the opportunity to realise your true nature and attain Buddhahood. There are infinite suffering beings waiting to be saved, and it is only by having a physical body that you can carry out this noble work. This body may bring with it endless suffering, but by chanting the name of Namo Amituofo, you can let go of the burdens of your Body, Speech, and Mind. Your Six Roots are constantly in sync with of the external world. Whether these interactions lead to further contamination or to purification depends entirely on the state of your heart and spirit. Namo Amituofo.
