On the occasion of the noon offering during the on the sixth of June, 2025, Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju provided the following teachings on the vital importance of focus in our spiritual lives.
The concept of valuing focus is essential for any practitioner. When we speak of the value of focus, we are referring to two distinct qualities: the preciousness of our opportunity to practise, and the ability to direct one's entire heart and mind toward a single objective without distraction.
If you wish to achieve success in any endeavour, you must understand that focus is the key. Only through unwavering concentration can a task be brought to completion and your capabilities truly advance. When you study the various laws of the world and the , you must apply this same focus. It is only by specialising and dedicating yourself fully that you can develop true expertise and mastery in your chosen path.
In this world, there is no such thing as gaining something for nothing. This is especially true in the realm of spiritual practice. If you desire to achieve success in your cultivation, you must hold focus as your most precious guide. As your meditative concentration deepens, it serves as a clear indicator that you are becoming more diligent and courageous in your efforts.
Through this, you are able to remove defilements and attain purity, allowing your inherent goodness to manifest. When you are free from the clutter of worldly distractions, your spiritual achievements will naturally come to fruition.
If you wish to succeed in chanting Namo Amituofo, you must hold focus as the highest priority. As you continue your diligent practice, you will find that your mind settles into a state of deep peace and wisdom. When your chanting reaches the point where the wisdom of the Buddha manifests, you will realise your true self. With this realisation, you will find the freedom to be reborn in the of Ultimate Bliss.
Similarly, when you perform prostrations, focus is paramount. If you can synchronise the recitation of the Buddha-name with your physical movements, you are truly focusing on the present moment. This practice effectively eliminates spiritual obstacles and builds your meditative concentration.
When you recite the Sutras, you must also do so with a focused mind. By keeping every word and sentence clear, you prevent the mind from falling into a state of being drowsy or entering into distracting spaces. Under the illumination of the Buddha’s light, you will receive the energy and needed to strengthen your meditative concentration and allow your Wisdom to shine forth.
To continue your practice and make further progress, you must always return to the principle of focus. It is through this single-mindedness that the ultimate goal of is finally achieved.
Let us all strive to maintain this focus in every breath and every action, keeping our hearts aligned with the light of Namo Amituofo.
