The Radiant Essence of the Three Bodies

The Buddha possesses three distinct yet inseparable bodies: the , the Reward Body, and the Transformation Body. Although we speak of them as three, they are in truth one single, unified entity. To understand the Buddha is to understand this profound and harmonious integration.

The Body is the fundamental essence of the Buddha. It exists as a state of pure spirit and light. It is the original nature of the true self, which merges seamlessly with the heavens, the earth, and the vastness of the Dharma Realm. Because the Dharma Body is the ultimate source, the Reward Body and the Transformation Body arise from it.

The Reward Body represents the manifestation of wisdom perfected through practice. It is the form that appears within the Pure Buddha Land, often referred to as the Reward Body Buddha. A primary example of this is the form that Namo Amituofo manifests within the Land of Real Reward in the of Ultimate Bliss.

The Transformation Body is the form that appears in response to the potential of sentient beings, specifically for the purpose of teaching and guiding them. Examples include the form Namo Amituofo manifests within the Land of Common Residence for beings of all levels, or the form of Shakyamuni Buddha as he appeared in India to spread the Dharma, complete with the thirty-two major marks and eighty minor auspicious signs.

The Harmonious Dance of Function and Form

The Buddha is perfectly endowed with these three bodies. We can understand their relationship through their functions:

  • The Dharma Body serves as the substance or the foundation.
  • The Reward Body serves as the appearance or the manifestation of merit.
  • The Transformation Body serves as the application or the skillful means used to save beings.

Because of this perfect unity, the Buddhas are able to utilise their three bodies to connect with beings across different times and spaces. They perform the vital work of saving countless suffering beings, ensuring that every soul has the opportunity to find the path to liberation.

The Living Presence of Namo Amituofo

At the Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre in Goombungee, Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, we are blessed because Namo Amituofo is residing here. Through the practice of Practitioner Su, who has realised his true nature and attained Buddhahood, the Dharma Body is made manifest. He utilises countless manifestations to perform for beings in the spiritual realms and for those who have fallen into the demon crowds.

For the fourfold assembly—especially the monks and nuns—the opening of space is a critical development. When one's space is opened, one becomes capable of receiving messages from Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and other sentient beings. This allows for a deeper recognition and understanding of the Dharma Realm and the spiritual worlds.

The Precious Opportunity for True Cultivation

By engaging with these teachings, you can broaden your horizons, clarify the truth of reality, and increase your and wisdom. As your mind-capacity expands, you will no longer be attached to or tightly grasp the illusory phenomena of the world, such as people, events, or environments.

You will come to understand the following truths more clearly:

  • The suffering of those in the spiritual realms who lack a physical body is immense.
  • The helplessness of those trapped in the ghost realm is profound.
  • The human body is a precious vessel for True Cultivation.
  • You must cherish the opportunity to use this temporary body to realise your true self.
  • While you are at this Buddha-land, you must practise with diligence and keep your feet firmly on the ground.

Those whose space has been opened can, under the guidance and leadership of Namo Amituofo, our teachers, and Practitioner Su, return to their true self sooner. In doing so, they can more effectively save countless suffering beings, helping them leave suffering behind and attain rebirth in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
