The Illusion of Worldly Gain
People in this world are often consumed by the fear of suffering a loss. They cling to the belief that if they yield or give something up, they will inevitably have less, or that they will lose out on potential benefits that they feel entitled to possess. Because of this deep-seated fear, they are unwilling to let go of their attachments, leading them into a cycle of constant comparison and struggle with others. In the end, the result is that both sides suffer. In truth, the person who clings to this competitive and defensive mindset has already become the greatest victim of their own actions, as they have allowed their heart to be clouded by greed and insecurity.
During these moments of conflict, how many thoughts and intentions have passed through your mind? Every single thought and intention is governed by the laws of and cause and effect. They arise and then they vanish, only to arise again in a relentless stream. All of these are manifestations of impurity, and they prevent your heart from ever finding true peace or stillness. When you are caught in this cycle, you are merely drifting through the world, unable to see the clarity of your true self.
The Hidden Virtue of Suffering a Loss
If you truly understand the and the laws of karma and cause and effect, you will not be deceived by the various situations that arise before your eyes. You would rather suffer a loss than take advantage of others. To the outside observer, such a person may appear to have lost something in the immediate moment. However, in reality, they have gained a tremendous blessing. This is because the following virtues are all contained within the mental note and the act of choosing to suffer a loss:
- Mind-capacity: The ability to hold more within your heart, allowing for greater patience and understanding.
- : A genuine, selfless care for the well-being of others, which transcends personal gain.
- Tolerance: The strength to accept what comes without resistance, maintaining a calm and steady heart.
- Wisdom: The clarity to see beyond the surface of things and understand the impermanence of worldly possessions.
This choice is made naturally and willingly, not because you are forced by anyone else. It allows you to resolve old karmic debts as they arise, clearing the path for your spiritual journey. This is the behaviour of a wise person. Therefore, the common saying that suffering a loss is actually gaining is not without its profound truth.
Breaking Free from the Cycle of Reincarnation
People often calculate their gains and losses, yet they end up losing far more than they ever gain. This is one of the fundamental characteristics of being reincarnated in this world. Because we are so attached to these calculations, our hearts become deeply polluted, and we lose sight of our ultimate goal. As a practitioner, you must distance yourself from and eventually remove this worldly mindset entirely, for it is the very thing that keeps you tethered to the cycle of suffering.
The Path of Diligent Practice
You should replace the fear of suffering a loss, along with laziness and aimlessness, with diligent practice. Through this constant, unceasing effort, you will come to several profound realizations that will guide you toward the of Ultimate Bliss:
- Everything in this world is an illusion, and the only truth is to find your true self.
- It is a form of suffering to be unable to control your own mind, while the ability to do so is true freedom.
- It is vital to accumulate the necessary merits and virtues for your rebirth in the Western Pure Land.
- There is a necessity to stop seeking answers outside of yourself and instead rely on your own efforts and inward reflection.
- You must understand the principle of using the false to cultivate the True Cultivation.
A Great Blessing for the Wise
If you are currently in a state where your body is free from severe illness, you should know that this is the time to act and practise with diligent effort. Do not let the limitations of your physical body restrict your progress. If you can simply continue to move forward on this path, you are truly one who possesses a great blessing. In your practice, you must seize this moment to be diligent; this is the mark of a wise person who understands the preciousness of this human life.
