The Promise of the Buddha

In the ancient times, Shakyamuni Buddha perceived the sincere aspirations within the hearts of Prince Ajatasatru and five hundred great elders. They had collectively made a profound vow: 'When we attain Buddhahood, may we all be like Namo Amituofo.' Upon sensing this, Shakyamuni Buddha spoke directly to them, confirming their future destiny: 'You shall become Buddhas in the future.' This was not merely a prediction but a recognition of the inherent potential that resides within every sentient being.

In truth, Prince Ajatasatru and the five hundred elders were individuals who had cultivated deep good roots over countless past lifetimes. They had been disciples of Kasyapa Buddha in a previous era, and this reunion with Shakyamuni Buddha served as a momentous occasion to receive the confirmation of their eventual attainment of Buddhahood.

The Inherent Nature of All Beings

Every single being possesses the true self. In essence, you are already a Buddha, and you have the capacity to attain Buddhahood. The only difference between beings lies in the timing and the conditions of their . Some may drift for vast, immeasurable eons in the sea of , enduring endless suffering. Others, however, may choose to engage in diligent practice within this very life. By transforming their personality, applying themselves to the practice of chanting Namo Amituofo, and achieving a state of profound awakening, they can attain liberation and be reborn in the of Ultimate Bliss.

The fundamental difference between these two paths lies in the heart. Working from the depths of your heart is the most critical aspect of achieving success in the Pure Land path. Consider the relationship between your practice and your ultimate goal:

  • Chanting Namo Amituofo is the cause: It is the seed you plant in the fertile soil of your .
  • Attaining Buddhahood is the result: It is the inevitable fruit that manifests when the conditions are ripe.

Without the cause created through your daily practice, how could the fruit of Buddhahood ever manifest? You must seek to reclaim your true self, ensuring that you are no longer bound by the chains of karmic forces. Only when your true self is in command can you find true freedom and possess the capacity to engage in the work of saving beings. This is the true meaning of Pure Land practice.

The Path of the

If you seek only personal liberation—a state of peace, lightness, and ease for your own body, mind, and spirit—you are following the path of the . Those who attain the Four Sacred Realms—the Hearers, the Solitary Enlightened Ones, the Bodhisattvas, and the Buddhas—often focus on self-liberation while helping others only when the opportunity arises. However, the path of the is different. Those who follow the path of the Bodhisattva and the Buddha become 'friends without being invited.' Even if beings do not ask for help, the Buddha or Bodhisattva proactively reaches out to teach, guide, and save them. This is the distinction between those who seek only personal liberation and those who have fully embraced the compassionate heart of a Buddha.

The Urgency of the Pure Land Path

Once you have truly left suffering behind, found happiness, and realise your true nature, you will no longer be entangled by any form of hardship. Your heart will remain still, pure, and undisturbed by the chaos of the external world. Beings are naturally like this, yet because the obstacles of karmic forces manifest, the true self is unable to take charge. Instead, karma takes the lead, forcing one to live a life of sorrow, aging, sickness, and death. Many practitioners strive for awakening but pass away before they have fully realised it. Because their personality traits remain unchanged, their karma remains untransformed, and they are reincarnated into the six realms of existence. Who can say when they will again obtain a human body, hear the Buddha's teachings, and encounter the supreme —the Pure Land Dharma Gate?

This is why the Pure Land path is a method for achieving success in this very lifetime. It is the path to Buddhahood, allowing you to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss as you have vowed. You must put in the work from the depths of your heart. What others have attained is not your own; you must personally verify and personally attain it. Encountering Namo Amituofo in this world is an event difficult to encounter in millions of years—it is something that can be met but not sought. Since you have encountered it, you must seize this golden opportunity to practise, reclaim your true self, and realise one's true nature and attain Buddhahood. Whether you escape the sea of karma to be reborn in the Western Pure Land, attain Buddhahood in one lifetime, or simply chant the Buddha's name and listen to the sutras to form a Dharma affinity, you shall surely become a Buddha in the future.
