The Pure and Good Spirit
Words of Namo Amituofo
The Eternal Essence of the Spirit
Namo Amituofo teaches that the pure and good spirit is always present, residing within the heart. This spirit is, in essence, the that has been carried through accumulated lifetimes. It is the repository of all our experiences, thoughts, and actions, serving as the foundation of our existence across the vastness of the Realm.
Throughout the cycle of rebirth, this spirit has been reincarnated countless times within the six realms of existence. It has taken on a human body and traversed through infinite spaces and dimensions. While there have been moments of worldly pleasure, such happiness is merely an illusion—it is fleeting, temporary, and ultimately vanishes, leaving behind only the residue of suffering.
The Endless Cycle of Karmic Burden
Though these experiences are illusory, the suffering they generate is profound and seemingly endless. Because we continue to create , we must ask: when will this suffering finally cease? The spirit resides within the human body, and every thought we conceive takes form. Every form possesses , and when that consciousness enters the mind, it solidifies into karma. The eight consciousnesses are all contained within this spirit.
Because is driven by these thoughts and , we constantly engage in the three actions of Body, Speech, and Mind. Our physical actions create either merit or harm; the words we utter can either heal or wound; and our intentions serve as the root of all our karmic seeds. If we create good karma, the results are beneficial. However, if we create negative karma, we are destined to endure suffering. In extreme cases, we may create boundless sins, leading to boundless suffering. If one creates the karma of the hells, the spirit will enter those realms to face judgment and punishment. Without a savior, one may remain trapped in this cycle for an eternity, which is truly a sorrowful state.
The Obscuration of the True Self
Every being possesses this pure and good spirit, yet most people fail to recognise it or remain entirely unaware of its existence. The spirit is often enslaved by our habitual thoughts and perceptions, becoming deeply stained by filth and confusion. As a result, the originally pure and good spirit becomes covered in layers of dust and impurity.
In truth, our consciousness and our true self are two sides of the same coin. When our consciousness—driven by afflictions and confusion—is active, our true self remains hidden. Our personality traits and our ignorance are all manifestations of this consciousness at work. They form the heavy weight of karma that keeps us trapped in the cycle of rebirth, suffering without end.
The Radiant Path to
The purpose of our practice is to rediscover our true self. To achieve this, we must focus on two vital tasks: changing personality traits and purification. We must actively work to transform our negative habits and tendencies, and we must cleanse the mind of the accumulated filth that obscures our original nature.
As we diligently practise, we begin to remove the bits and pieces of our conditioned consciousness. We transform negative karma into goodness, entering a state of purity and kindness. Eventually, we achieve the transformation of consciousness into wisdom. When there is not a single trace of impurity remaining, the light of the heart shines forth, and the wisdom of the awakened being is revealed. This is the moment of true Awakening.
