Words of Namo Amituofo
Recorded on June 8, 2025, by Venerable Fa Hui
Words of Namo Amituofo, recorded and transcribed by Namo Amituofo’s disciple, Venerable Fa Hui.
In order to save all beings, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas spend hundreds of kalpas cultivating their auspicious characteristics. This teaches us that one's physical appearance is a vital link in the process of receiving and guiding beings toward the truth. It is an indispensable condition for the fulfillment of one's vows in practice.
The Mirror of the Mind
Appearance arises from the mind. From this, we can understand that if you wish to cultivate a dignified appearance, you must put in the work at the level of your own heart. You cannot simply focus on the surface; you must look within.
as the Source of Beauty
Compassion is an important condition for cultivating a dignified appearance. When you possess a heart of compassion, it naturally manifests in a compassionate countenance. Similarly, when you learn the art of joyful letting go, your face will naturally radiate a joyful and serene expression. This is another essential point that is required for the success of your practice and vows.
The Path to True Dignity
True dignity must begin by dignifying one's own heart. This is the fundamental level from which all transformation starts. Once your mind is clear and stable, you will be able to thoroughly understand principles and phenomena. This clarity allows you to:
- Dignify your heart by removing all attachments.
- Ensure your mind is not defiled by external influences.
- Allow a dignified appearance to arise naturally from within.
When you chant Namo Amituofo purely, your heart becomes dignified, and the in your mind naturally becomes pure. By maintaining a heart without discrimination or choice, and by treating all beings with an equal heart that knows no high or low, you will naturally be able to respond to all situations with wisdom and grace.
Chanting Namo Amituofo to the End
A dignified appearance arises from the mind. A pure mind gives rise to a pure appearance, and dignified auspicious characteristics naturally follow. This state of purity, dignity, and auspiciousness cannot be forced or sought after through external means. Instead, you must be grounded and diligent in your practice.
You must chant one Buddha's name to the end. By doing so, you will remove defilements and attain purity, which will naturally lead to the realisation of your true self. This is the true meaning of self-nature. Namo Amituofo.
