The Illusion of the Water-Moon

Water is fluid and adaptable; it takes on different appearances depending on the environment, the terrain, and the conditions it encounters. Yet, regardless of the form the water takes—whether it is a calm lake, a rushing stream, or a stagnant pool—it can always reflect the light of the moon. The moon hangs high in the sky, distant and serene. When you look into the water, you see the moon, but that is not the true moon; it is merely a reflection. No matter how much the water ripples or how violently it is disturbed, the reflection remains an illusion. It is not the moon itself.

The Unchanging Moon and the Changing Beings

The moon has remained in the sky for thousands, even trillions of years. The moon that we see on Earth today is the same moon that has witnessed the rise and fall of countless civilisations and the shifting of the stars. Throughout these eons, the moon has faithfully followed its orbit, rising and setting in perfect rhythm. In contrast, consider the lives of all beings and the fourfold assembly. The moon you see today is the same one you saw in your past lives, yet your own face, your form, and your identity have changed countless times. You have been reincarnated through the six realms, tasting every possible flavour of existence. You have played countless roles within the laws of and cause and effect, enduring endless suffering, torment, and hardship.

Within the Illusion

Today, the moon remains the moon, and its reflection can still be seen in the water. This reflection is merely a projection of the moon in the sky. No matter where you are or what kind of water you look into, the moon you see there is an illusion. My children, your hearts and spirits are currently burdened with bitterness and the weight of this illusory world. Have you reached a point of awakening in this life? Are you willing to settle your mind, to stop chasing the reflections, and to begin the journey of finding your true self?

The Purpose of the Bodhimanda

A bodhimanda is a place established specifically for the purpose of practice, for the goal of reaching an awakened being. While we may call this a water-moon bodhimanda, we must understand that even this place is, in a sense, an illusion within the greater dream of samsara. However, it is within this very illusion that you must engage in diligent practice. You must use this space to look past the reflections and find the truth that lies beyond. Do not be deceived by the ripples of the world. Instead, focus your heart on the path of Namo Amituofo, and you will surely find your way home to the of Ultimate Bliss.
