The Rising Waves of Karma: Teachings from Namo Amituofo

The Rhythmic Pulse of Existence

The following discourse was recorded and transcribed by Namo Amituofo’s disciple, Venerable HaiZe, on the fifth day of December, 2025. Namo Amituofo offers these words to guide us through the turbulent waters of our existence.

Namo Amituofo teaches: The rising waves are the manifestation of karmic conditions and the causes and effects. The vast ocean is formed by the combination of multiple karmic conditions of countless beings, all gathering together as one. It is a collective expression of the lives that have come before.

The Unfolding of Karmic Conditions

When the wind blows across the surface, it signifies that conditions have ripened. At the precise time and place where the wind meets the water, waves arise—this is the result. The curling and crashing of the wave is the cause for the next moment. This cycle of karmic conditions and the causes and effects manifests constantly within the myriad phenomena of the world and reveals itself clearly throughout the course of a human life.

The Endless Tide of Rebirth

Human life is nothing more than a continuous cycle and reappearance of these karmic patterns. If one remains unaware, if one has not yet attained the state of an awakened being, then life follows life in an endless sequence. Throughout your many lives, you have been trapped within the six realms of rebirth. In this life, you may appear in one realm, only to find yourself absent from another; in the next life, you may vanish from this realm and manifest in a completely different one.

This process is exactly like the waves of the ocean. From the moment the sea was formed until this very day, the waves have continued to rise and fall. This has persisted for hundreds, thousands, or even millions of years. Even if the topography of the earth shifts and the location of the sea changes, the nature of the waves remains the same. It is always the wind blowing across the surface, stirring the water, creating wave after wave, with the latter waves pushing the former forward. This is the appearance of the arising and ceasing of conditions; it is the clear manifestation of karmic conditions and the causes and effects.

Returning to the Eternal True Self

If you observe the rising waves of this great ocean, you are looking at a natural phenomenon. But do you have any realization from this? Everything in this world changes with such incredible speed. You must not maintain any attachment to this physical body or to the various conditions you encounter. Instead, you must engage in True Cultivation, seeking to rediscover your true self, for that is the only reality. Your true self is the only thing that is truly constant and eternal.

A Compassionate Call to the Students

I sincerely hope that all students of Hsiang Kuang Pure Land Buddhist Centre will cherish and grasp this precious opportunity to reach the state of an awakened being during this lifetime. Please understand that this is a vital process in your journey to save the world, to deliver beings, and to achieve rebirth in the Western Pure Land. It is not the final destination, but rather the necessary path you must follow to fulfil your vows. You must act accordingly, with diligence and unwavering faith.
