Recorded and transcribed by ’s disciple, Venerable Fa Hui. 5 December 2025. Teachings from Teacher Practitioner Xia Lianju: In the vast and intricate web of and the causes and effects, the element of 'Conditions' plays a pivotal role. We often focus on the 'cause' of our actions, yet without the manifestation of the proper conditions, the resulting remains dormant. If the conditions do not align, or if they dissipate before they can fully mature, the fruit of our past actions cannot manifest in the present moment. This is because conditions act as the vital spark that triggers the fruition of karma; the ripening of these conditions is the essential prerequisite for any karmic result to appear before us.
For ordinary people, these conditions are constantly present within —the sights, sounds, smells, tastes, touch, and phenomena that surround us. For the ordinary person, the manifestation of karma requires a precise interaction between these Six Dusts and our six sense organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, mind). If our six sense organs (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, mind) are incomplete, or if the Six Dusts are insufficient to trigger a response, the conditions remain unmanifested, and the karmic result has no way to emerge. In our daily lives, the interaction between these roots and dusts forms the six consciousnesses, which in turn manifest our karma. For instance, when a sight enters the eye, it becomes an eye-. If the eye root is impaired and cannot perceive the object, the condition is not met, and the corresponding karmic result remains hidden.
However, the experience of Buddha or , ancestral masters, and Those who have realised their true nature is fundamentally different. For those who have achieved purification in their practice, the Six Roots are either partially or fully awakened. Consequently, when they manifest in the world, any single root can perceive any of the Six Dusts and reveal the entire reality of the situation. This is not because they are relying on the limited consciousness of an ordinary person, but because they are operating through the vast power of Wisdom (Prajna). Even though they may seem to be focusing on a single condition, they possess the capacity for total knowledge and complete manifestation. For example, when they hear a sound, they do not merely perceive the auditory input; they simultaneously sense the entire environment and the current situation. Their perception is often far more acute than that of an ordinary person with perfectly healthy eyes. This profound clarity is the true nature of the relationship between karmic conditions and the causes and effects. We must strive to purify our own minds, so that we too may move from confusion to , and eventually, to the of Ultimate Bliss.
