The Precious Opportunity of Human Life
In the context of spiritual practice, the length of one's life is of paramount importance, as it directly influences the success of one's cultivation. Within the human world, which is one of the six realms of rebirth, we possess a physical body. This body serves as a vessel that allows us to use the temporary to cultivate the eternal. The temporary refers to our physical form, which is subject to the laws of impermanence and has a finite lifespan. When this life comes to an end, the physical body decays. If you have not yet realised your true self by that time, you lose this precious opportunity to use the temporary to cultivate the eternal. Your spirit then leaves , and its destination remains unknown.
The Hidden Seeds of the
When you are reborn into another human body, the achievements from your past practice remain stored within your Alaya . However, even if you continue to practise, if you have not yet undergone deep purification, these past achievements remain covered by layers of ignorance. Consequently, you must begin your practice from the very beginning once again. It is only through gradual purification that the capabilities from your past practice can slowly manifest. This is why the duration of your life remains so critical. Before you have successfully transformed your , the reality of impermanence is always present. If your life ends before you have realised your true self, you find yourself in the same position as before, with your spirit wandering into an uncertain future.
Many practitioners have spent countless lifetimes in this exact manner, passing through one life after another without reaching the ultimate goal. Once you achieve purification, you can begin to see the potential for practice that you have cultivated in past lives. If you are fortunate enough to encounter a true spiritual friend, or if you follow the teachings of the ancestral masters and the guidance of the Buddha and Bodhisattvas, you can move step by step toward removing defilements and attaining purity, eventually reaching the state of an awakened being. This entire process must be completed within the confines of your current, limited lifespan.
The Vital Necessity of Bodhicitta
For those who seek to realise their true self, it is absolutely necessary to arouse the mind. Without this aspiration, you remain far from the state of . For those who have already realised their true self, this awakening is not an end in itself; it is a foundation for the work of delivering sentient beings. However, one requires a sufficient lifespan to have the opportunity to both realise one's true nature and to save others. Therefore, it is essential for every practitioner to cherish every second, ensuring that not a single moment is wasted, and to be fiercely diligent in their practice.
The Compassionate Vow of Infinite Life
The true nature of which we speak is -nature. This self-nature does not increase or decrease with the passage of time. Even after passing through countless kalpas and infinite lifetimes, your true self remains unchanged. Every sentient being possesses this self-nature and has the potential to realise it and attain Buddhahood. Yet, because we are trapped in the cycle of rebirth, our ignorance covers this true nature, causing us to suffer through the pains of birth, aging, sickness, and death for endless ages. We find ourselves unable to attain liberation or escape the six realms of rebirth.
When was in the causal stage of his practice, he clearly perceived the suffering of all beings and understood the vital importance of lifespan. Consequently, among his Forty-eight Great Vows, he made the vow that all who are reborn in his land would possess infinite life. This vow was made specifically to help sentient beings in the of Ultimate Bliss to have an infinite lifespan for their practice, ensuring they can eventually attain Buddhahood without the anxiety of their life ending before they have reached awakening.
