Namo Amituofo’s discourse:

The Inevitable Solitude of the Soul

The journey through birth, aging, sickness, and death is a solitary one. No one can accompany you, and no one can follow you into the depths of your own karmic destiny. We are born alone, and we die alone; we come into this world alone, and we depart alone. When the inevitable trials of life—the suffering of aging, the pain of sickness, and the finality of death—arrive, no one can bear these burdens on your behalf. Even when your most cherished loved ones witness your suffering, they may feel deep sorrow and a desire to help, yet they are ultimately powerless to save you. What can they truly do? The path of being reincarnated is a solitary road, and only your own follows you, step by step, through the darkness.

The Tangled Web of Karmic Debt

Throughout your many lives, regardless of which realm you inhabit or whether you are in this world or another, you are bound by the threads of your own actions. Your new karma and old karma are inextricably tangled, obscuring the truth of your existence. You are caught in a cycle of suffering and fleeting , driven by the relentless pressure of karmic consequences. You are constantly engaged in the cycle of:

  • Seeking to collect debts from others.
  • Repaying the debts you owe to others.
  • Repaying a kindness received in past lives.
  • Seeking revenge for past grievances.

In this complex web, who is your wife, and who is your husband? Who are your parents, and who are your children? The roles shift constantly. The person who is you in this life may be another in the next. Today, I may consume you, and in the next life, you may consume me. Today, I may repay a kindness, and in the next life, you may be the one settling a debt. It continues to grow and consume beings without pause. Beings suffer deeply within this cycle, and because no one can save you from the churning waves of your own karma, you must realise that this journey is truly solitary.

The Individual Path of Practice

The path of practice is also a solitary journey. Even if you are surrounded by fellow practitioners who offer support and companionship, the internal work remains yours alone. You must ask yourself:

  • Who is purifying their heart, and who is allowing it to become stained?
  • Who is making progress, and who is retreating or standing still?

Each person must bear their own burdens and reap their own rewards. No one can replace you in this effort; this is the absolute truth. Therefore, you must be diligent and never allow yourself to become lazy or complacent. This is not a fantasy, but the reality of your existence. You must continue to move forward without hesitation or pause.

to the Light of the True Nature

Recognise the facts of your existence and practise with diligence. You must nurture your character and your moral conduct, constantly working to increase your and your mind-capacity. You must restrain —your eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, and mind—so that you are not disturbed by external influences or led astray. To move straight ahead without wavering is the true mark of your skills. If your heart wanders outward, it will only gather dust. If you lose your way, you must be the one to suffer the consequences, for no one can take your place. When you feel your practice faltering, you must have the awareness to stop, reflect, and then take a great step forward once again.

You never know when or where you might encounter a person or hear a sound that triggers a moment of profound realisation. In that instant, you may awaken and realise your true nature. This Awakening and Buddhahood is a solitary achievement, where the light of your heart finally manifests and shines forth. You must realise that all beings and you are one body; if you can realise your true nature, then all beings can as well. To save beings and help them leave suffering behind is your responsibility. Move forward with this purpose, for it is the greatest blessing for those connected by karmic affinity.

The Unbroken Path of Chanting

In your practice, you must chant the name of Namo Amituofo. Chant continuously, without interruption. You must chant until your heart opens and your wisdom is clear. You must chant until you are pure and unstained. You must chant until your practice becomes a unified whole, until you reach the state of deep peace and wisdom, and until you understand both the essence and the phenomena of the universe. Chant until you can attain rebirth in the Western Pure Land with total freedom. All of this is a solitary journey, with no one to accompany you, yet it is the path to realising your true nature and attaining Buddhahood.
