The Symphony of the

The sound of the Ten Powers and Four Fearlessnesses is one of the many subtle and profound melodies that arise from the eight virtues of the water within the Seven-Jewel Pond of the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss. In this sacred realm, one can hear the teachings of the everywhere. The gentle rippling of the water, the rustling of the wind through the seven-jeweled trees, and the melodious singing of the birds are all manifestations of the Dharma. These sounds are not merely environmental; they are the result of the Buddha's , flowing naturally from the true self of every being present. Those who wish to hear these teachings will hear them clearly, while those who are not yet ready will simply experience the peace of the environment.

The Profound Nature of the Ten Powers

The Ten Powers refer to the ten distinct types of wisdom and the four types of fearlessness possessed by a Buddha. As one listens to the subtle sounds of the waves, these powers naturally enter the hearts and minds of the beings in the Western Pure Land. While Bodhisattvas may possess these powers to a limited or partial degree, only a Buddha possesses them in their complete and perfect form. These powers are the essential tools for attaining Buddhahood, resolving the complex problems encountered by beings, teaching the Dharma, and subduing the influence of demon crowds. They manifest spontaneously, allowing for the resolution of all doubts and the answering of all questions with perfect clarity.

The Ten Powers include the following capabilities:

  • The ability to know the specific causes behind every action and the resulting karmic fruits.
  • The ability to perceive the past, present, and future karmic forces of good and evil of all beings.
  • The ability to understand the depth of Meditation (Concentration) and the power of all states of deep peace and wisdom.
  • The ability to discern the person’s potential, capacity, and Wisdom (Prajna) of every individual being.
  • The ability to clearly understand the thoughts, desires, and aspirations of all beings.
  • The ability to know the conditions of life across the ten directions and every space within the Dharma Realm.
  • The ability to understand the various paths of practice and the level of attainment reached by each practitioner.
  • The ability to know the past lives and the history of the cycle of rebirth for every being throughout infinite eons.
  • The ability to foresee the future of all beings, including their eventual path through the cycle of rebirth.
  • The ability to know whether a being has completely eradicated their afflictions and attained true liberation.

The Four Fearlessnesses of the Enlightened

The Four Fearlessnesses represent the absolute confidence of a Buddha when teaching the Dharma and guiding beings. This confidence arises from the fact that the Buddha has already attained complete and possesses the following qualities:

  • Fearlessness in teaching: The Buddha speaks the Dharma without any hesitation or doubt.
  • Fearlessness in sharing realisation: The Buddha openly shares the truth of their own experience and the path they have walked.
  • Fearlessness in answering: The Buddha is capable of providing perfect answers to any question posed by any being.
  • Fearlessness in guidance: The Buddha has completely severed all afflictions, leaving the heart pure and unstained, and can clearly articulate the methods to overcome obstacles to practice and awakened being, and achieve liberation from the cycle of rebirth.

Receiving the Buddha's Infinite Wisdom

This is a brief introduction to the Ten Powers and Four Fearlessnesses. Under the constant blessings of Namo Amituofo, beings in the Western Pure Land are also able to attain these same powers, reflecting the wisdom of the Buddha. This wisdom and the power of the Buddha are beyond the reach of mere words; they can only be truly understood by the Buddhas themselves. May all beings strive to cultivate their practice, that they may one day fully realise this supreme state of being.
